I've must have turned blind because I can't see what's wrong...

The field C Postal is an textfield.

SELECT DISTINCTROW Left([C postal],2) AS zip, [Ventas de postales].[C postal]
FROM [Ventas de postales];

Check your references

Under Tools>References, make sure nothing is 'MISSING'. Usually when basic Access functions start wigging out that is the cause.

Check the archives for 'missing references' to find out more about this phenomenon (I've never experienced it, personally).

Thanks - I was a little quick I think - sorry :-( , 'cause the problem is only in this database so I have to find the ghost here and not in the system.

Did you try rebuilding the query?

If it's not a Missing Reference, I'm out of ideas. I created a query practically identical to yours, and it worked fine:
Code:
SELECT DISTINCTROW Left([ParticipantID],2) AS zip, BackuptableParticipants.ParticipantID
FROM BackuptableParticipants;
