Hi,

I have two databases which both run ok in Microsoft Access 2000 on the same computer.
Our company now has installed Microsoft Access 2003 on some machines.

I am having trouble getting the shortcuts to run in Microsoft Access 2003 mainly recognising the workgroup information file in the shortcut
which it doesn't seem to like. Shortcuts both run ok under Access 2000.
I can get the databases to work In Access 2003 but only one at a time by joining onto the workgroup administrator file by doing

Tools
Security
Workgroup Administrator menu.

One is called envirosys.mdw and other is labsys.mdw i.e \\path\envirosys.mdw and \\path\labsys.mdw
I can join onto these successfully and database works but i need to use both databases on same computer.
Doing it this way everytime i want to use other database have to join onto other .mdw file

Do i need to create a new workgroup information file in access 2003 or do i need to convert database ?

thanks
gaz

You may not be getting a lot of responses because it is not quite clear what you are trying to do. Do you have separate copies of the database on each computer? Or is this a network situation? Where are the shortcuts and what are they pointing to?

Hi,

OK, Let me try and explain.
I have two databases called LAB and PLANT
They are on one computer. They run under Microsoft Access 2000.
They each have their own short cut.
The front end is on desktop PC and backend on server.

I can't remember exact syntax of shortcut but it works-

LAB shortcut is something like:-

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ Microsoft Access\"D:\Laboratory Database.mdb" /wrkgrp\\it-temp\labs\labs db\labsys.mdw

PLANT shortcut is something like

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Microsoft Access\"D:\Plant Database.mdb" /wrkgrp\\it-plant\plant\plant db\plantsys.mdw

We now have access 2003 on some computers. If i copy databases and corresponding shortcut onto desktop it won't work. Do i need to create a new workgroup information file in Access 2003 or can i convert workgroup information file from Access 2000 to 2003.

I can get Lab database to run by changing shortcut to just

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ Microsoft Access\"D:\Laboratory Database.mdb"

As there is no WRKGRADM.EXE I also have to join onto appropriate workgroup administrator group by opening Access 2003 and then :-

Tools
Security
Workgroup Administrator

Then i join onto \\it-temp\labs\labs db\labsys.mdw

Same if want to use plant database i use shortcut
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\ Microsoft Access\"D:\Plant Database.mdb"

Then i join onto \\it-plant\plant\plant db\plantsys.mdw

But everytime i want to use either database i have to join onto appropriate mdw file everytime as i can only point to either labsys or plantsys.

Basically it doesn't recognise shortcuts when i include workgroup information file in Access 2003.

I think you need to look at your shortcut targets - My shortcut targets specify the Access target, i.e., "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSACCESS.EXE", then the program path, then the workgroup, then the user name. If your target contains a reference to the wrong access version that could create the problem - i.e., Office10 instead of Office11.

i have office11 in my shortcut as IT department told me and have tried that.

Do i still need to create a new workgroup information file because i am using a different version of Access i.e 2003 instead of 2000 ?

thanks

I don't know of any issues using a 2000 mdw with a 2003 database. What is the exact text of your shortcut target? When you say it "doesn't work", what does that mean? What exactly happens when you click on it?

HI,

I'm not at work now so cannot give you shortcut target or exact error message.
Basically it won't open database. No logon screen.
Something along the lines of doesn't recognise command line when i run the shortcut. This as you says points to the syntax being incorrect.
I wrote database 8 years ago and am a bit rusty on access now. I don't work in IT department. i am only a lab technician. IT department aren't much use as nobody uses Access or wants anything to do with it. I have hardly had to touch it over the years then they install Access 2003 on some machines only and don't tell you. I'm still running under 2000 and works fine.

Maybe if i have more time i will be able to sort it out.

thanks for your help

Shortcut syntax can be a bit tricky. When you do get a chance to check your shortcuts, make sure they read like this:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\MSACCESS.EXE" "Path to your database" /wrkgrp "Path to your mdw file" /user YourUserName /pwd YourPassword

I know there have been times that I have been frustrated with shortcuts only to discover that I've used a slash in the wrong direction, or something silly like that.

Ok when i get chance i will check my shortcuts. The working shortcuts are a straight copy from my desktop onto the server then onto the machine with access 2003 on it and with the Office11 bit changed. So only thing that could be wrong is Office11 bit if it is in wrong place.

Maybe i should create a new shortcut from scratch.

Also i usually have to get IT guy to log on as system administrator as in the past i couldn't do things i.e join onto a workgroup as it said access was denied until he had given me full permissions.

thanks again
bye.

The other thing that could be wrong is if the shortcut includes a drive letter to the network, and the computer you are copying the shortcut to has the network drive mapped to a different letter.
