This is driving me crazy!!!!!!!!!

I have a database for my customers containing nearly 2000 records.

I have found a contact template from Microsoft which I wish to use for maintaining information about any contact with them.

I like the forms in there too.

I am having great difficulty getting the data from my existing database in to the new contacts database.

I have tried every method that is available but none actually put any records into the new contacts table, they just create a new table which dont work with the forms.

I would of course like to have a linked database so any information changed in one database reflects in the other and vice versa.

Can anyone help please.

(In nice easy steps without jargon please)

Thank you

Please show us what you have tried -- and the results.

Hi, not sure I know what you mean when you say "show", but I have tried importing my database into the contacts database as a excel spreadsheet and access database and also I have linked the table (to keep them both updated) but as I said even tho it comes in it actually comes in as a separate table and therefore the information is not shared.

Thanks

You can change the Record source to the new Table/Query through the design view.

Try that :)

Tell me if I was close :p - I'm new just like you :D

I thought you were talking about an existing Access database, and a second database with Contact table and form.
Where does excel spreadsheet fit?
Can you just add the Contact table and Form(s) to your current database from the template?
If not, can you tell us in plain English WHAT you are trying to achieve?

When I right click the table I do not get a option to get into Design View, so I cannot change the record source, although I would love to be able to.

thanks for replying tho

Im sorry for the mis-interpretation friend but i meant the forms - if you have the forms present in your database - go to them and change the record source to the new table/query :p

I am talking about a existing Access database and it is a 2nd database with contacts table and forms.

The excel spreadsheet was a experiment to try and get the data from my customer database to the contact database, it didnt work!

Basically, I have my own Access database for all my customers, nearly 2000 of them, I saw a template on Microsofts download for maintaning contacts with customers, I would like to link my customer database with the contact database, and be able to update them together. When I link the table into the new database it show there but none of the information is shown in the contacts forms, I dont know if this makes sense or not

thanks for helping me

regards

Nick

Import the data into the new table within the database with the contacts and forms - then change the record source for the contacts and forms - that should then work - in my mind anyways :D

Try this:
From your old DB export the contacts table to Excel. Adjust the column heading to match the template target table. If the exported Excel sheet contains a primary key column delete it. Then open the template and link to the Excel sheet. Last append old records to the new table.

Hi thanks for replying, I have tried that, although I am not sure if its what I want.
(even though it didnt work, the data didnt go into the contacts table)

For example I would like to maintain the records identical, so if you phone a customer and he says my email has changed then changing it in the contacts database would change it in the main customer database aswell.

thank you

kind regards

Hi, when I right click the form I only get a layout view, whilst I do get a option to change the source here, I did not see the option to select the linked table.

thanks once again for helping me

thanks, I have tried that but it wont let me choose the imported data of a linked table as a record source.

In the top left hand corner, there should be a button called view - Click the arrow below, a drop down menu should appear in which try selecting design view.

If all else fails, Link your table and I shall sort it :)

Take note I use access 2007 so try linking it in my format :D

go to advanced when commenting and attach the file- make sure its not too large a file size - This may be the cause of a "ready made template" - I created my forms in my database which allows full customization :p.

If your database is too large create a smaller one with the same forms and contacts inside.

Try creating your own form - then try making the record source your table.

If that works, it is because its a template and cannot be changed.

Pardon my interruption, but it helps if you do a compact/repair before attaching a DB even if you intend to zip it.
