MS Office Activation

Sorry my simple mind can't quite grasp this.

If I purchase the software and make a copy of it and give it to someone else and therefore it will contain the licencing data or if it doesn't and gets the licence code via email which can then be passed to the second illegal user, what's stopping the illegal user from logging on the same website with the same licence code?

I'm not sure how the MS Windows works, I have to admit, so hence an idiot's guide is needed to understand this. Thanks for your patience.

Hi. You ask a very good question; but rest assured, there are plenty of licensing schemes available. You already thought of one, and I suggested another. Other posters also mentioned several other approaches. What's stopping the illegal user from logging on the same website with the same license code? Maybe their IP address or even the MAC address of the machine they're using. Still, there are other ways besides those two to stop them from doing that. The sky is the limit.

Many thanks. I think checking a machine is more cumbersome and doing it through a website is worth investigating further.

"Cumbersome" to you as the developer, or the user? Just wondering your thoughts...

Myself as the developer.

I need a unique identifier of any machine which can always be read by code, then OK. I can allow the user to revoke one machine, which cannot be used in the future, and add another so that they have always 3 machines that they can use, that would be good.

I see, re: Cumbersome. However, if you're trying to prevent getting ripped off by your clients, then perhaps a little "cumbersome" work is worth the trade off. No? Just my 2 cents...

You are probably right. I am currently trying to see whether all machines have a unique identifier. Perhaps the BIOS using vba code.

Okay. Good luck with it. Let us know how it goes...
