I was trying to make the point that the Governor says he's protecting children, but won't address any part of what is the leading cause of death among kids. Don't really know how you got to a dystopian future with this. It was the Nazi's, the people on the right, that went after the girl.

Are you again comparing a machine gun that is designed to be used in war scenes and kill, with something that is designed for travel and is mis-used?

What does the design matter, if it is the outcome that hurts and really matters?
Do you realize that guns are used to STOP crimes and PROTECT people in many, many occasions that will never make the news and never be recorded, because there is no such recording mechanism?
Have you ever walked through a bad, gun-ridden neighborhood in the USA?

If you landed on a planet for the first time, objectively not knowing anything about it, and many bad people there had guns, isn't the first thing you'd do to protect your family = make sure you have one too? Or would you go around preaching and bragging that you had no gun, so that your family would be sacrificed to marauders?

The idea of there being NO guns ANYWHERE is not an entirely bad one.

The irrational part comes when you start suggesting that ONLY THE GOOD PEOPLE go WITHOUT guns.

If law-abiding citizens are not allowed, and do not obtain, guns, what is the immediate outcome of that?
Only the criminals will have guns. Because they, obviously, being criminals, will not respect the "no guns" law.

Thus the outcome is removing the ability of self defense from law abiding, innocent families - which makes no sense.

The right to defend one's self and one's family must surely be one of the most basic rights in humankind.
If you live in a country with almost no guns, then maybe guns aren't needed for that.
If you live in a country with lots of guns, then guns are needed for that. Removing them is not noble, it's unfair, and hurtful to those who wish to retain an item in their home or their car that may save them from being hurt by others.

Hence my point about we have to be cautious and thoughtful about gun control.

It may be true that "many" (possibly even 'most') people could agree in theory on the idea of pressing a magic button and there being no more guns anywhere, ever again.

However, this is obviously not the paradigm we live in. The truth is that, generally speaking, in areas of the country--maybe just say the entire country, since the States are so connected and people are so completely mobile--the reality is that if you suddenly deny law-abiding citizens the right to guns, the only result is that law-abiding citizens do not have guns. Criminals still have guns, and this situation understandably frustrates most people's sense of fairness.

If there was any way that a lawmaker could guarantee that the removal of guns from law-abiding citizens would concur exactly-in-time with the total and complete removal of guns from criminals (i.e., from everyone), you would get a lot more agreement. I'm not saying you would get full agreement, and possibly not even Most. Nor is my intention to get bogged down in that particular question, as I realize we could begin talking about sports, hunting, etc - my main intention here is simply to point out this one thing: On the self-defense issue, which is a very serious and very basic human right, exactly identical to the right not to be abused, killed, tortured, raped, etc--on that issue, the simple removing of guns from law-abiding people is inherently unfair, as it occurs by itself, and everyone knows the bad guys are still all out there, running around with millions of guns on the underground, if not overground as well!

I have tried very hard to respect and even learn from the perspective on American guns, the perspective that is had by people from other countries.
However, the flawed aspect of it cannot be ignored, nor should it be.
To simply come into a country that is absolutely over-run with guns, and where being invaded in your home or car or sidewalk and hurt very badly is a real threat every day in every USA city.......and to say "Why don't you guys just ban guns?" - is a very silly thing to say, if you stop for a minute and think what the result of that would be, and that its main result would be to hurt innocent people. To desire that is no better than the people who you believe don't care that guns are hurting people - because in that moment, you yourself are not caring about the fact that removing guns only from the good guys would mean the same thing as hurting people and not even permitting them to be given a chance at fighting back.
It may seem indirect, but it's just as bad, if less intentional.

Apparently you know a lot more about guns than I do, not sure as I haven't spent time actually shooting a variety of old-fashioned guns (movies you reference) vs new guns.

I have one semi automatic .380 , only took it to an indoor shooting range twice (15 minutes each) during the last 3 years, only to ensure I have some semblance of an ability to aim/fire, make sure it works.

It's only purpose is self defense in case the crime, currently very substantial in Phoenix -- a person was MURDERED LAST NIGHT in a HOME INVASION here--ever arrives in my neighborhood or home, at least I'll have a chance to protect me + family, other than just begging the criminal to spare our lives. Common sense I think?

Now on that issue I completely agree.

Not only have American baby names gotten totally ridiculous in recent years, but there is a trend that is very popular now to deliberately misspell them. Modern parents seem to think letters are just squiggly marks, bereft of meaning

Example, I find these everywhere in young school aged children: Steephan, Kristofer, Leeam, Gennifer, Madyson, Andruw.

SO ridiculous, and unfair of parents who clearly wish to indulge in some kind of nonconformist be-me heroism, selfishly indifferent to imposing the burden on their offspring of a LIFETIME of sighing and repeating, "yeah, no, sorry, it's actually misspelled like such-and-such"

If you get off on little acts of individualistic weirdness, go for it, but don't use your kids as unwilling recipients of the impact

You missed one. In the new era of social consciousness (or should I say Fantasy), Prostitute has almost entirely and universally been replaced by "trafficking victim".

Somehow in the shrewdness of feminism and me-too nonsense, the reality that many women choose to sell sex, even including many of the ones involved with drug addiction and including the ones who are collaborating with teams of people including men, has been successfully erased and denied.

Now, every arrest for prostitution labels only one party as a criminal - the payor. Women prostitutes very quickly learned, of course, that all they had to do when confronted by law enforcement was cry about being coerced or trafficked, present evidence of being on drugs, present evidence of a man somewhere helping coordinate and collect, and BAM - like a magic wand, all responsibility was eliminated. Any man involved was now a "trafficker", any woman involved was now a "victim", and given a free apartment, charitable help, a place to stay, etc.

Of course, that's true for a few prostitutes, but not true for very many others. Alas the lies we tell ourselves, in society's quest for perfectly equal outcomes for all people! (Except anyone belonging to a group that has traditionally done well, of course!)

Yes, I could list maybe a couple of dozen names we give to sex workers i just gave a sample. I'm sure Americans have some other names we don't use in the UK.
We have many foreign workers here, some doing lower paid work. (Like how Americans treat mexicans) So, many have second jobs on the shady side to supplement earnings. Now, if they choose to do this work or are forced is unclear. My wife is in a care home, many carers are from Romania or India, I know some have a second job (I'm not saying how I know). Not that many 'walk the streets' these days, they work in respectable massage parlours or similar establishments where it is clean and safer. They even take credit / debit or American Express cards.
Yes trafficking goes on, always has always will. If these do-gooders 'save' these workers, they can create a whole lot of fresh problems for them because suddenly a part of their income is removed, then they move into crime or drugs, much more risky.

I was talking about legal immigrants who work here and pay tax etc. Illegal immigrants get put in hotels and healthcare and money for free, all paid for by the government. They don't need to work.

It's the legal ones who often need supplementary work.

In the USA, ive noticed on some TV programmes, it seems that housekeepers, nannies, gardeners etc are Mexican. Just an observation, don't get all touchy about it.

That is one area where TV isn't exaggerating. It depends on the location as well, but for the most part, menial tasks like that are done by our southern neighbors. Why? Because they want to work and will do the jobs we DONT want to do for a lot less.

We all complain about it, but it is the first place we go to when we want something done!
