Why is it that people seem to lack manners in todays society?

How many times do people cut you off at round-abouts or throw your change on the counter when you complete your purchase?

When was the last time you heard a kid say "please" or "thank you" ?

Is this a Scottish thing or is it world wide?

I'm not having a go at just kids, because it seems to me that just about everyone is at it, from the very young to the very old (who, I may add, appear to be so self obsessed they forget that other people have lives too).

Ahh, that feels better. Give it a try, go on. It's very thereaputic :D

Yeah, I find everybody under 60 and over 70 very self absorbed and rude.

I find people to be friendlier in Scotland compared to southern England

Thank you for your thought provoking post.

But, please, can you explain what a "round-about" is? Maybe that's where the problem lies.

Gratefully yours, George

I think in the states you call them circular traffic something or other, its not common there as far as my limited experience, but causes chaos.

Apparently they tried them, out in parts of Canada and the Orientals drove straight over them, so they took them out again, they're too complicated for the Yanks anyway;)

I alsway thought they were invented because Europeans were too cheap to install traffic signals.

Do you have the relative costs of each?

Brian

That was a joke.
I'm sure the roundabout was invented long before the traffic signal.
I was driving in France last year and a number of the roundabouts just outside of towns had traffic signals. You would think one or the other would be enough.

Not just France, many of our roundabouts now have traffic lights too:eek::rolleyes:

back on track with manners,

Everywhere I have been in the UK - from Kent , london to b'ham i have always seen good manners..it may not be a thank you , but an acknowlegment - a smile or a nod - sometimes you might be too busy to give a thank you - so a nod or a smile will do

at fuctions i go to the waiters/waitress might not get a thank you verbally - but everytime a smile or a pause in the converstion - and i have always seen at least 1 thank you from everyone on a table at sometime through out the meal

i am installing this in my 2 year old to say please , thank you and goodbye -

she seems to get the hang of it and enjoys say and waving goodbye to just about everyone - even in Sainsbury's and 90% of the people say good bye back to her- theses are just people she is passing in her trolley ,

and there are no ages gaps all are happy to say hello/goodbye to her ...

so not sure why you guys aren't getting any respect/politeness ..
are you giving out yourselves perhaps - a smile or a thanks from you might prevolk a response ??

Usually, roundabouts are considerably more expensive than signals, which is why signals are so common - both in the UK and in France. Unless you're talking about mini-roundabouts, which are dirt cheap. It's not uncommon for a roundabout to cost £30k, and signals £15k.

As for friendliness, the south east is a miserable place indeed, and has few happy, courteous, polite inhabitants. The north east is a much friendlier place, but I won't comment on Scotland as I've yet to venture that far north!

The south west is clearly a friendly, happy, tolerant place as Rich lives there!:)

We call them round abouts here. I guess it just depends on where you live in the states.

I know what you mean with the please and thank yous. I went to a friend's house the other day and was so surprised to hear her 2 year old daughter saying please and thank you on every request. (which of course, was many, but it was still cute)

Hmmm.. not quite with you on this one - I have had the inlaws over from the states and also norway - both sets have agreed that manners where better here than where they were from...

I go quite often to London - and I have (nearly)always got a smile and a thanks - from everyone , I deal with various business, clients etc and again politeness is the core value that we all seem to share ..

I go shopping and again from the young shop assistants nothing but polite manners - an occasion joke, bought a couple of shirts Sunday and the young man on the stand made pleasant conversion with me , my partner and my 2 year old , while they got my shirt in my size , i have also been to the hospital and again everyone has been polite ,

i have had punk's hold doors open for me, and when i have held them open for them - again , a smile in acknowledgement -

manners does not need to be verbal, while driving again manners I see it all around me , a wave to acknowledge that they have cut me up accidently or that they have made a mistake (we all done that one ,,lol) - a smile

I just don't seem that much bad manners at all...

when i say punks i mean - spikey hair punks - not clint eastwood punks...:D
