Talking about the Romans has anyone else ever wondered why Roman symbology states that 4 is stated as IV and yet on a analogue clock its IIII

Ok just me then....

It must vary, I'm looking at one now and it says 'IV'.

Like what?

Col

We got some straight, metalled roads and hot baths from the Romans but decided to wait 2000 years to to register the idea.

More to the point what did the Angles ever do for us?

Alc it says that examples of IV are "extremely rare"

Postscript Edit: it goes on to qualify that by saying that they are rare in UK but more common outside of UK

No idea. Why?

I saw her on TV sunday night when Macca was doing a gig in Liverpool.

I also wondered if Americans on this site would be as quick to claim her if she was born in Japan and had US citizenship - like they do with Bob Hope when he is clearly English.

That would be it, then.
I'm definitely outside at the mo'.

As a Briton I'd like to protest about the dreadful sacking of my country by those awful Angles and Saxons and let's not even mention the Jutes..... Oh and there were the Romans, mind you they did a lot for us and then there were the Normans. I'm going to sue the lot of them.

You guys should destroy your own neighborhoods. I heard that really gets your oppressors back for all the evil they've done to you. Just look at East LA.

This thread happened whilst my back was turned so many comments that I might have made are now too late however a couple for Statsman.

In the North of England we have a clothing chain called Jumpers , selling, well no prizes for guessing. Loads of the signs in Japan are also in English and its a bit like being in Holland as the natives speak better English than our kids.

At the Smithsonian a couple of weeks ago I'm sure it mentioned a number of American squadrons being equipped with Spitfires, but info overload could mean I'm wrong. Early Mustangs were fitted with the Merlin engine to improve performance.

American's English has been criticised , again.
Saw this on a T shirt at London airport.

Homer is saying
"English! Why should I learn English, I'm not going to England."

Yes, we make our living creating databases on computers. Next thing you know you'll be telling me that Bill Gates and Michael Dell are really British.

Are you trying to tell us that those 2 invented computers?

Brian

No, it's 'educate Americans day'. You'll thank us in the long run when you become accepted into the real world.

Col

I think you mean Col's world.
Just for the record it bears few similarities to the planet the rest of us reside on. :D
