Because they have been banned - there's no trace of them in the members list which would be if they weren't. So, perhaps you got the PM before they were banned but Brian's post is accurate. They are outta here.
I expect that a lot of guys will be opening their PMs in the future and finding the spam mail there. It was a cunning way to do it as there is no simpe way to remove it all.

Yeah I used to catch a few of them trying this tactic when I was a SuperMod as I would watch and if I saw someone who just joined sending PM's to people and not posting, I would make note of who they PM'd, and then I would do a temporary ban on the person's account (for a day or so) so I could check with those who had been PM'd. 100% of the time it was a spammer so then I could ban them permanently and they would have hit only a few folk. But that was just my Melancholy personality where I watched things like a hawk so I could catch things up front instead of always being behind them. That was a fun part of being a SuperMod - trying to keep the board as clean from spammers as possible and catching them BEFORE they could do things (based on finding their handiwork on other websites, etc.). But it does take a lot of time and effort and most people don't want to put that kind of time and effort into it. Oh well, things have been pretty good for quite a while. Hopefully it is only a phase that we've had and not that they have found another weakness in the system again.
Yeah, I remember that you used to do a great job Bob, but that kind of effort can take its toll emotionally, mentally and physically. We plebs are just grateful that there are those willing to devote their time to clean up for us.

I keep hoping that as I provide tips on how I did things that perhaps some of the existing mods will pick up some tidbits that might help them in their duties.
