Holidays in danger zones

So, like my husband, he fumes and screams at the television,

No I don't, there's no point.

As I said before there are only 2 Americans who I respect, that's you and Cindy.

In fact, I try not to personalise my comments, unless of course it's someone who is being particularly obtuse.
I leave the name calling to the Americans as that seems to be the way they react if anyone dares to be critical of the great USA. So I presume that's normal behaviour for an American.

I don't think there's many names I haven't been called over the years.

So, like my husband, he fumes and screams at the television, and I have to listen to the tirade, as Col spews his anger and outrage in the confines of the watercooler and I have to take a deep breath and try not to take it personally and defend myself.

LOL, I'm just sitting listening to the colourful descriptions of tools; paint and other peoples' joinery skills as mine carries on with the never ending DIY site that has become our home and wishing he would settle down to shout at the TV for a while

That's men for you Tess, they're never happier than when they have something to gripe about. I make it my mission in life to supply reasons to those who are otherwise deprived :D

By the way, I didn't mean to rattle anyone's cage about Detroit, I just thought that article was rather amusing.

Lets see if we can find a few then, shall we?

How about "honey bun" or "sweetie pie" or "cuddles" ??? :D

I'll start calling him "honey bun", that should take care of that one. Who wants to take "sweetie pie" and "cuddles"? :D

Hey Tess! :)

I don't take anything Col says personally, I just have fun with it. The truth is, I agree with most of what he says.

Maybe I should have been born in the UK, who knows.

:D

Oh no... I can totally see his side.
And I too tend to agree with so much of his ideals. Which is why we became friends in the first place.

It's only when he groups "Americans" all together and says something derogatory that I am in danger of taking it personally. It SADDENS me to the core that we, as Americans, have this reputation. MOST people I surround myself with do not fit into, in the least iota, any branding that Col projects his feeling of rage.

Now of course every country has its extremists. In fact, there's a wonderful girl who used to visit quite often, who used to work with Col, who was quite a religious girl and had very adamant views because of it. Now, I didn't agree with everything she said, but I could certainly understand her viewpoint because of her beliefs. I didn't hold that against her at all. As I said, she was a lovely girl. I could potentially lump her into a group of people I rail against with great gusto in my private thoughts. But I'd never attack her personally.... and I always thought before I spoke about the great religious machine, tempering my language with her in mind, knowing that, in her soul, she was not any part of the evil manipulations I detested, and I wouldn't ever want her to think that I thought she was.

As an American, I feel especially fortunate not to have been born a woman in other countries. I feel especially fortunate to have a least a glimmer of hope to rise above my born station in life. Yes, at times, of course, I see the hand of power holding me down lower than my potential. But, I think we all experience that. (Well, all of we humble people anyway. Not those of us born into royalty and riches... lol) Sometimes we all feel powerless and ignored, disenfranchised at times, and helpless... but not without hope.

I've never lived anywhere else or experienced any other government. I only know that, no, it is not perfect, but I could have it so much worse.

So, with all of that said, when I hear Col rail against Americans, it's the only country I know and the only country of which I can call myself a member. So, it's just a tad difficult to bear his disappointment and still feel that glimmer of hope that I hang on to.

Love all of you.
Tess

As someone who has respected, defended and supported your viewpoints for many years (and agreed with most), this is more than a little upsetting. :(

Hey, he respects two Americans, that's amazing enough. Let it be... :p

The sad thing is, I always respected his opinion, and we used to all get along quite well. It used to be hard to stay away from this board. We've lost a lot of members from those days due to the political BS happening in the world right now.

It's just a disappointment, that's all.

LOL... First of all, my cage wasn't rattled at all about Detroit. In fact, I recently saw a quite humorous T-Shirt saying something like "I'm so tough, I vacation in Detroit." It was worn by a grey haired, white woman with glasses. I thought it fantastic. Almost made me want to hug her. In retrospect, I'm glad I didn't as Col says, she may have been packing heat.

And you are right, sweetheart. They really are happy when they have something to complain about.
