Filter records in a form using a combobox

Hi everyone

I use Access 2003 and saw Ken Higg's sample database to filter records in a form using a combobox. I managed to replicate his settings and wondered about an extension to the principle, but I don't know if it's possible.

In the sample, a value is selected using a combobox and all matching records are filtered so it's possible to scroll through them. Is it possible to have a second (or more) combobox on the form so it is possible to filter on one or another criterion? This would mean one combobox filling the other one and I realise that the one that Ken provided is unbound.

The reason that I'd like to do this is, for instance, if there are records with Surname, 1st, 2nd and 3rd lines of the Address and Postcode, I may wish to filter records by entering the Surname or Postcode. Each of these fields would have to be displayed in a combobox. As the sample is set up at present, only one of the Surname or Postcode has to be selected via the combobox and the other is a textbox.

It may be that what I'd like to do isn't possible - or someone may have come up with some other idea. I'd prefer to have the search/filtering on the form, rather than using the buttons on the Form View toolbar.

That's brilliant - thank you for reposting it to the samples area.

Your solution goes further than I need - it filters by cbo1 AND cbo2 AND cbo3 but I only need cbo1 OR cbo2! I'll dissect the forms, controls and code to see if I can figure out how it works.

I have a query which relates to your sample - several of the tables and forms are ghosted. I wondered if that meant that they couldn't be opened or the design viewed, but I can do both. What does the ghosting mean?

Yes, I understand. I can see why one may wish to hide forms, tables etc., but it doesn't take a great deal of playing around to unhide them! I'll look into more permanent ways. I realise that a determined "fiddler" will probably get around most methods, but at least they're likely to foil the casual user. I class myself as one of those as my experience with Access isn't great!

I'm also having issues with my form. I am very new at access and was trying to develop a form that I could select a state or NOTAM number and have it filtered. I have attached my tables but if anyone could help I'd really appriciate it.

I saw your question and it reminded me of this example that used to be in the forum before it was hacked. I have re-posted it. I'm not sure if it is what you are after however it may give you some ideas.

I tried clicking on this as I was interested to look at it, and it doesn't take me anywhere. It just says something about "If this is a valid link contact your administrator". Just FYI
