Why is this a no-no with an access backend file?

The reason i am asking is because i am developing a multiuser excel app.. and considering whether to build the queries in the back db, or as excel worksheet functions/ macros.

Is there any risk of corruption or a big performance hit if the queries goin the back end?

The problem is you cannot link queries from a back end to the front end, only tables can be linked. You must create and run your queries from the front end.

Not true..

You can view both tables and queries from excel. I just did it..

Winshent, please read David's reply...

He says you can only link tables, not queries... when working with 2 access databases.

When working with excel, running queries in the BE database should be no issue ...

cheers thats what i needed to know.. as this is specific to developing an excel front end with access backend.. wanted to know if i should expect any issues before going down this path..

my other option was to develop an access front end to dynamically build excel reports.. but this would take much longer to write.

As a note if the Excel front end is not workbook specific or if you have any elements that can be used in more than one workbook remember to save the vba in your Personal.xls workbook.

Yeah, is this a new feature with Excel 2007 as i never noticed that with 2003?

If you do have some generic functions that could go in personal.xls, is there any way you can role these out to users?

As long as other users do not have anything in their Personal.xls files you could distribute this as well. Do a search to locate the path. Yes it is available in 2003, if you go to record macro and state you want to save it in your personal workbook you can refer to it from any workbook.
