guys -

My PC bit the bullet over the weekend - need a repalcement asap (It wa quite a while since my last back up)

Anyway - spoke the the guy at PC world (I know but they are local and as I said speed was an issue)
anyay he said that 2003 will not work with windows 7- is this true ?

(I had order a laptop which is xp - but had to do it fromtheir business account)

Office 2003 does work with windows 7. Serves you right for going to PC world:eek:

Well that's what I thought -

the young Nerd - then tried to sell me office 2007 - I told him it was crap and he was rather put out by this - and said why then I asked him would he use it for Access - and he rather sheepishly said no ..

The actual tech desk guy was great -

My PC had a crisis and I thought try PC world first and see what they say -

the guy said he could fix the problem - 70 + pounds - however given the age of the hard drive - would not be prepared to offer any long term solution
in effect said the drive was on its last legs the PC is 6-7 years old - and ok for what I was doing with it -

his opinion was it might be best to replace HD or the whole pc with something a bit more whizzy - then he fixed my mobile phone which had been giving me grief - and told me to send it bck tog et it sorted properly

the sales rep was just after a sale and what me to spend more than I really wanted to - but I hope he gets boils where you don't want them ...

Well, I take exception to the statement that Access 2007 is crap. It is not crap. But there are things that you have to do differently than in previous versions and you have to find out what in those previous versions won't work in 2007 and fix them. But that is the same thing that happens with any kind of software upgrade. Legacy items do not always work in the later versions (not just with Access and not just with Microsoft).

Although I would prefer 2010 over 2007 if I could have it.

well I stand corrected - however a lot of problems seem to relate to 2007 - that don't seem to relate to previous version and from what I have heard from 2010-

Msoft decided to go flash and fancy - most users (office workers) want basic and simple so that it works without have to fight through all the security -

If you are wanting a home pc thats flash great but it was eating in to processing capability -
For your office type machine you want a system that is a bit like a land rover - not a Ferrari (?) - at home you can have a Ferrari.
Office enviroments generally have lower requirements and need just the tools to do the job-

Just my view

That's the exact combination that I use (at home) and I haven't had any problems with it at all. (xp at work)

I'm thinking that I will eventually have to upgrade to a later access version which to tell you the truth I am not looking forward to.

I will most probably skip 2007 and go straight to 2010 but hey my 2003 has some really good databases now which hardly need any development so as they run and they do everything (very well) there is no rush the main issue is whether they run on subsequent operating systems.

I am paid to get my work done
I am not paid to learn how to get my work done

I haven't really come close to reaching the limits of access 2003 so the idea of being blackmailed into 2010 just on the grounds of compatibilty with operating systems is a bit gauling. As for the other products.
Lucky if I used 10% of the features available in excel.

I do wonder how much longer they can continue to push more and more stuff into these programs. I have a really nice triathlon bike and I generally try and get rid of non essentially items rather than adding to it.

As for PC world my branch is quite good. It very much depends on the staff you talk to. There is a lad called Nick in the Fort Kinnaird Edinburgh one who used to work with a company doing networking at quite a high level and he knows his stuff. I think the staff generally are better than the rep they have somehow acquired.

what the techie guy told me was there was a problem with publisher and that old fiels in publisher 2003 might (might) not open in New windows enviroment -

this was the only problem they told me that they knew about - the techie also told me that he had only seen one such occurance
