The general concept is:

Where like minded contributers can work on agreed project(s) for the benefit of all members

Example - For the last few weeks have been working gathering data for a Country / State (Province etc) Town database. I'm pretty good at recognising good Austrailian data, but not so flash on Burkina Faso

If this sort of data/projects can be verified by members, the final data could be available to all members to their benefit, if appropriate.

Major snags to this idea are:

Do site owners agree with the concept?
Is this a free/pay for service?
Are members willing to contribute effort at no (some) cost?
If some cost, who decides?
etc,etc

If there are enough willing contributors, skills could be improved and the site could offer enhanced services to members.

It's up the flagpole, does anybody salute?

I personally like the idea, I imagine it would be a bit like how Linux is developed by programmers, but on a much smaller scale here obviously!

I imported in all countries and cities from MySQL's sample World database (more information and copyright here).

Hopes this is a start. Note: Some accent marks may be lost; I've checked few and for most part they got imported correctly (how odd that import works but linking would be funky...) but worry that some may be missing certain diatribes.

Thanks, there is stuff in here i have'nt thought about. Now, I'm up to about 130,000 towns / cities and about to discover God knows how many Post/Zip codes apply to each of them - most of the info I've found (free) so far relates to map makers/GPS with latitude/longtitude for delivery services between postcodes

aaaaarrrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhhhh the world has to be easier than this, but then again, those with Access skills become valuable!!
