Acc97 and Acc2k icons

Acc97 and Acc2k icons: How can i prevent acc2k and acc97 'association icons' from becoming mixed up.

I have both 97 and 2k installed happily on my (work) PC, except that if I double click on a file in explorer say or a desktop shortcut, the .mdb attempts to open up in whichever version was last-used-on-my-pc.

Any ideas? Thanks.

try Open With..

I think if you right click on a database in explorer and goto open with, you can choose the default app to use and then there is a checkbox which says "always open with"

i am pretty certain that this ensures that that version of access will open the files..

I have both versions and certainly access 2000 opens all my files..

my only other suggestion is to make sure that access 2000 was installed after 97... think this overwrites any defaults 97 had over opening up files...

Someone may know a better way, but I ran into the same problem, and the only solution I found was to put the path to the correct version of access in the shortcuts.

For example, If I make a shortcut to my Access 2000 frontend database, it defaults the target to be :

"C:\Main\SQL FrontEnd\SQL_FE_2000_V12.mdb"

I then change its target to be:

"C:\Program Files\Office 2K\Office\MSACCESS.EXE" /NOSTARTUP "C:\Main\SQL FrontEnd\SQL_FE_2000_V12.mdb"

"C:\Main\NTNed\EST_FE_DB.mdb"

I then change its target to be:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\msaccess.exe" /nostartup "C:\Main\NTNed\EST_FE_DB.mdb"


This does not however fix the problem if someone browses to the database to open it.

I was wondering , if all one's Acc97 were located in the same folder as the Acc97 software installation itself, and Acc2k databases were in the Acc2k folder, that may solve (part of - see below) that particular problem.

That would only leave (!most of them!) those databases stored elsewhere.

I don't believe there is a fix for this. The problem seems to stem from the fact that windows cannont differentiate between the versions because they share the same file extension. The file extension is what windows uses to determine what program to open it with.

If you trust the users to make the right decision, you could goto the file associations, and remove the 'Open' command from being the default command for .mdb files. Then make 2 seperate Open commands. One for 97, and one for 2000. This would force them to right click to open an .mdb file, and they would then have to select which version to open it with.



I dont trust my users that much. I just made sure that none of them have permission to convert a database and tell them if they can't open one, to come to me with it.
