Hi,

I have about 11 applications written in good old Access 97. Some of them are small and some of them are quite large
(over 160 forms, 200 queries, 150 reports ....). In some cases some of them in some tables can have over 500.000 records. Until now I was happy with Access 97, but many of my customers are going to Windows Vista, so it's time to change from 97 to 2007 to keep up the pace of time (even thinking to move database to SQL server express). I would like to know from your experiences how is the new Access working in practice compared to 97, it's speed, stability, corruptions (I know about bug when he can delete database you try to compact.

Thx for your answers.

Just my opinion:
I don't like any Office 2007 application. It takes longer to do development work, even if you know where everything is located, because the default menus and button bars are contained in a single entity called the "ribbon".

Now, the ribbon is highly customizable, but I have not been inclined to go in and figure out how it all works because I like to actually use my productivity applications to become more productive, not to figure out how to jump through hoops.

And I say all this knowing that others will come along and say "quit your whining, it works great". But I'm just telling you there is a very steep curve going from anything to 2007 and that your users could potentially become less productive, at least until each of them has figured out how to modify their UI to make it work as well as the old UI did out of the box.

Just my opinion.

You could consider using Access 2003 under Vista. It works fine and you avoid the A2007 learning curve.

i still use A97, although i'm informed from here it doesnt work under vista

i also have AXP (2002) and access 2003

these have a similar look and feel, a few extra features, make more demand on the cpu, and perform not quite as well imo

i also have A2007, but i have avoided using it, and just have it, as some clients have it, and i need to be able to see their issues.

I agree - try versions before A2007, if you can get them

The question was about Access 2007 runtime. One important point to make is that Access 2007 runtime is free whereas Access 2003 is not. As well, Access 2003 is getting increasingly more difficult to purchase.

No need to be rude. I was trying to give dfistric helpful advice. Frankly I don't actually care if you don't like what I said. You are at liberty to post your own opinions if you think I am mistaken.

the trouble with runtimes is that you dont get the facilities you normally expect in access ie the sort/filter/binoculars etc, and you have to have robust errorhandling, as any error will crash the program

personally, i think if people are investing in access solutions then another £80/ $150 is worth it for the main environment

Not sure if I can post URL since I'm new here:
Code:
[URL]http://cvajniga.707.cz/Access2007_bugs.rar[/URL] ~26MB

HTH

P.S. I've already found new bugs which are not listed in the Access2007_bugs.rar yet.

Thx,

looks like your link doesn't work. (maybe just for me)

Maybe due to firewall settings... (?)
Can you try the following link?
Code:
http://www.alis.cz/relax/download/beta/Access2007_bugs.rar
pwd = A2007bugs

I don't ever use that sort/filter/binoculars included in Access, I have my own search, filter, sort functions and also global error handling routines because this is more suited for me. I never use macros, and I don't want customer to
full around to much and everything in my application is code driven.

In last 10 years I didn't have need to move from Acc 97
because he was stable and fast (as fast as he can be), but with Vista and some new features in Access 2007 (compared to Acc97 not to 2003) I was thinking to move forward. I can live with Ribbon, but what really makes me crazy is that stupid application button on the upper left corner which you can't remove, and that Powered by Microssoft Access in runtime (not the message, fine, but why did they have a need to make it as hyperlink to open browser to point to microsoft site is beyond me)

Ok, back to the point, I just want to know is Access2007 in current form viable to use in commercial enviroment or not.

My apologies if you found this to be rude; that was not my intention. I merely pointed out an important difference between 2003 and 2007. Which part is rude?

Your apology is accepted. It is quite easy to misinterpret what people mean in these posts. I was upset by "The question was about Access 2007 runtime." which I took as a rebuke about my referring together with Gemma to A2003 which keeps a very similar/look feel to A97. Please accept my apologies as well.

Ok, I get it now and you're right that it's easy to misinterpret.

I happen to be with you on preferring Access2003 over Access2007 (I've put up a few posts about this one). I would also rather that a client play it safe with Access 2003. In addition, any features that Access2007 has to offer will not be in the application created in Ac97, and some features (like the ability to export reports to Excel) was kindly removed by Microsoft so you're right that ACC2003 is a better way to go.

That said (back to my post), I did feel that it's important that the person asking the question not find out the hard way that he's getting smacked with a bill for the privilege of distributing database using 2003 when he could do so for free using 2007.

Anyway, I'm glad things are clear and everyone's happy :)
