Hello,

I found a somewhat related thread but thought I would post a new one just in case my problem happens to others who were 'forced' to "upgrade" to Windows Vista Home Basic when buying a new machine....

Okay, no more complaining, here's the issue:

I have a small (8 MB) Access 2007 database stored on a machine in the office which is running Windows Vista Home Premium. There are two other machines running Windows XP Home (SP2) that can connect to the Access 2007 database with no issues.

But on my Dell Inspiron Vista Home Basic machine, I cannot successfully open the database stored on the Home Premium machine. I CAN see this database, I can see other files and open/copy them, but I cannot open the database. I am attempting to do this using the wireless connection.

I tried running these two commands as the administrator (found on another forum) because I think this is more of a network problem rather than an Access 2007 problem specific to Windows Vista Home Basic

Code:
netsh interface tcp set global rss=disabled
netsh interface tcp set global autotuninglevel=disabled

But these two commands did nothing.

I should also point out that when this database is stored on an XP machine (one of the others in the office) the database opens just fine on this Vista Basic machine!

I'm confused and frustrated! Any help is very much appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike

Just an FYI for you - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you do NOT use Access via Wireless connection. Access is fragile enough that if you have ANY drop of connection, you can find yourself with a corrupt database. If a user is connected to the database and the connection is dropped (no matter how slightly) then you will find yourself with a corrupt database.

Hi Bob,

Thanks for your advice. I'm starting to think that it's a terrible idea to have this connection via a wireless connection.

Is there anything I can do to make it work (wirelessly)? Otherwise I will simply have to "plug in" when accessing the DB.

Cheers,
Mike

I agree with Bob. This is untested, but I would guess your "least likely to fail" alternative on a wireless network would be an unbound application that did not maintain any ongoing connections to the back end.

What Paul said is probably the least dangerous, but going to be very complex and a lot of coding. It is unfortunate that Access is like that, but it is. So, there aren't many options available.

Why not switch to a DLAN Network? You could make the switch literally in minutes and you'd have a faster and much more reliable setup.

I'd guess your problem is possibly due to incompatibility somewhere along the line between two of the (various) versions of Windows you are using.

In the past I've had problems getting XP Pro to open files on XP Home - file opening worked in the other direction, and seeing worked both ways, just as you describe. The solution was to go to the Wireless Connection properties and install the NETBIOS protocol on both systems. The connection would take slightly longer to establish but worked normally and reliably thereafter. I don't have much experience of Vista, but I believe Home Basic is VERY basic, so it could be worth looking at the protocols there.

Thank you for your responses. I think I will use a wired connection instead of wireless. I appreciate the very quick responses!

I think you may have posted your last while I was adding to mine!

2 things....

1.
I had the same sort of issue when I bought my Vista laptop. Came up with an error saying I did not have the necessary permissions and to contact the system administrator. (or something) Wonder if you get the same error.
I searched the error and found I had to edit the registry on the Vista machine and from then on no probs.

2.
Since fixing up the registry (Wish I could remember what I did) I have had no problems. The only issue I have found is that when a Db is in design mode (a Db on the Vista machine - nothing to do with the network) and the wireless networking is turned on, the thing slows to almost a stop. Takes forever to select something, move it, double click to open the properties window etc ???
Turn the wireless network off and everthing returns to normal !!

If you can post the error message (if there is one) and I will try to remember what I did.

Dave
