It just doesn't recover the data pages where records have been deleted until it is compacted.
Basically compacting creates a copy of the database with empty tables and writes the valid records to them. That is part of the reason why records can end up in any order after compaction.

that's a lot of bloat for temporary files though. the thing that often causes bloat is images. are you importing pictures.

Images are bloat city however that is because bitmaps particluarly are not lossy and even if you compacted you would not gain any space.
With a normal databse with about 25 users I reckon you get about a 20% bloat this is about 500%.
Is this a Front End and Back End implementation?

its a front end to a SQL DB.
Im currently building it, so im always deleting and adding tables and data.
It actaully jumped very quickly, must be one of the processes that Im doing. Im keeping a manual backup of my versions on daily basis, and it jumped from about 64mb to 160, to 693MB.
But like I said, I'm running a few very long loop which take about 20min to complete. All this time it is writing and reading SQL database. Maybe that's whats caused it.
I have figure out that you can do c&r each time you close Access, so i activated that option.

maybe your long procedure isn't as efficient as it might be. I would suggest you start another thread if you want some help on that.
