Hi all,
Some advice please...
Firstly, I am a complete novice when it comes to Access.

I am looking to make an attendance recording system for my club.

My feeling is as follows:-

1: Membership table holding membership number, name, address etc.
2: Attendance table holding membership number and dates attended.
3: A form to look up and display the members name from table 1 and to write the membership number and the date to table 2
4: A report to display (on screen or print) the members names and dates attended.
5: A "new member" entry form.

Can someone please give me some advice on the way to get the form to read the members details from table 1 and then write them to table 2?

If the above is rubbish please advise on a better way to do this as I have no knowledge of Access, but am wanting to learn

Regards
Bob

Your concepts appear to be pretty sound. What you need, is a main form for the member information (it can also be used to enter new members) and then you use a SUBFORM for the Attendance table. By doing that you navigate to the memeber and then you can enter the attendance details for them in that attendance table.

Does that help?

Hi Bob
Thanks for the reply.
As I said I am a complete newbie with Access, so a further question if I may:

To access a member record I am presuming the best way is to enter the membership numbers (in the form of "NIC01") into a field, if I was looking for a record in Excel I would use VLOOKUP to find the record, is there a similar function in Access perchance? or is there a better way?

Also can you recommend a decent Access "how to do it" book or website which explains the use of forms and fields to manipulate data?
Cheers
Bob

You would use a combo box for selecting the record.

And for a good online tutorial in Access go here:

http://www.functionx.com

(look down the left hand side as there are many different tutorials and then in the list is Access 2010, Access 2007, Access 2003, Access 2007 VBA and Access 2003 VBA.)
