I have a database which has a front and back end. The user was using an mde file to access the database when it threw her out. When she went into the front end it gave her a message stating that the database was in an unrecognisable database format and asked her if she wanted to repair.

She choose to repair and did get access to the database, but the backend size went from 25mb to 18mb. Can this be explained?, i had a look at there does not seem to be any records missing and I already regularly compact the database and it has never compressed this much. And any ideas why this would have happened.

When access repairs on opening does it do it differently?

Thanks

The database was Compacted along with the repair. 25 to 18 is not that big in my experience.

When a record is deleted, Access keeps it in the database until you compact and repair. You don't see it naymore, can't access it, but it is there, somewhere.
I think it has something to do with saving some hard drive work or to prevent fragmentation.
It is a good thing to compact and repair once in a while to help performances and save some hard drive space (especialy on big databases).

I compact it fairly often but it never seems to compact as much as this.
