Access2010 Lost File Association

My Access.exe lost its association for some reason and every time I click on an accdb file I’m asked to choose a program to open this file.

I checked the files association in the control panel and they all point to Access2010 + when I’m asked to choose a program to open accdb files I choose Access.exe but next time I’m asked again.

I did click on repair Access in the control panel but the results are the same

Any solution?

It's not an Access specific question, it's more Windows. But here's how:

Just curious do you have more than one version of Access? Say Access 2003?

Good point but I only have Access2010 + Office 2002(no Access) + Office 2013(no Access). In any case all was ok until a few days back, I will click an.accdb file in Explorer and Access2010 will fire-up. Not anymore

Go to command line and try the Attrib command. Have a look into that.

I have forgotten my DOS commands vbaInet, how do I accomplish this?
Attached is a snip shown that all Access extension are connected to Access but still Access does not recognize them

I was actually thinking of assoc and not attrib.

assoc .accdb

... and see what it's associated with.

Everything looks ok from your screenshot though. Try a reboot too.

I have tried reboot. The command gives me accdb=Access Application.14
I dont know what the 14 means but at least we get "Access".

I think the best will be to uninstall / reinstall Access and hopefully will fix up the registry where I think the problem exist. I will do that on the weekend

14 denotes Access 2010.

Before you go uninstalling, use the assoc command to disassociate the .accdb extension then try associating it back to Access.exe going through the normal "Select default program" way.

If that doesn't work, then I'd advise that you ask this question in an appropriate Windows forum.

I thought it will be faster to re install Access but even after an uninstall / registry clean / reboot / reinstall I still cant open an .accdb from the Explorer. So now I got a message in a windows forum and I'm curious to see what the problem is

Did you try what I mentioned in post #10 re disassociating it using command prompt?

It's basically:

assoc .accdb=

After you run that, try and re-associate it by opening any accd and selecting "always use ...etc"

I did the above and the results are the same and i dont think I will find a solution unless some expert from the thechguys forum comes with a solution.

But next month I will be getting the windows10 download from MS and it will be the right time to do a clean re install (after I get the .ISO and make a DVD) of all my programs.

Searching the web I found the attached combination commands (FTYPE and ASSOC) but did nothing to help with the problem

FINALLY IT WORKS! Problem Solved!


The snip I included in my previous post is correct and did the trick. Now clicking any .accdb opens Access with no problem like before

But I had included the parameter %1 (as per the web article I found) after the MSACCESS.EXE and with this parameter it does not work. I searched the web for “Accessruntime file association” and there are some nice articles in the 1st search page.

Here are again the correct command lines:

FTYPE accdbFile="C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14\MSACCESS.EXE"

Assoc .accdb=accdbFile

I was actually thinking of Ftype but I wasn't sure if it would help, but good job oskar.
