AccessXP Corruption Cycle - Uninstalled Network Cards?

Well, this is really strange,

As active forum users know, I am not having a good time with this version of Access. This post marks a new low in the relationship!

I was working in a form, adding command buttons. I cannot document all of the twists and turns that occurred but among them were errors like "cannot save as another user has not saved their changes" and something is wrong with the "network".

I have installed NIC cards in two PCs but have not hooked them up. The O/S is XP and I wonder if it is just too 'smart'. I finally closed the program in frustration to start over.

When I opened it again, immediately the message that the dB was corrupt appeared. I cannot compact it. When I try, I cycle into another 'corrupt' message. I tried the JetComp but to no avail.

Access will not allow me to import objects from it into a new dB. I know that I lost my work and will have to start over with an earlier version. [Calmly hiding extreme frustration]

My question is, is XP O/S or Access XP so 'smart' [dumb] that it cannot deal with having unconnected Network cards?

I saw one comment in a post here that Access XP is very stable. Boy I wish it were for me! I am actually becoming afraid to work in this environment.

Already I have found that AXP installed from Developer will not run without opening errors in the VB Code Window without Visual SourceSafe even if it is not needed by this old user. Could these network cards be my problem?

I guess I better hook them up in case. This is only to string 2 PCs together at my home. It is not like there is anyone else!

Any advice is always appreciated!

OK Tony, now I understand. And agree. My fancy has been taken by Delphi, should I ever find the time.

About half a year ago I ran across a little free program on the web that just knocked my socks off. Its name is Picture Tray (http://picturetray.com) with the function of taking large byte-sized JPGs and reducing them to web efficient sizes. At a file size of 1/2 a meg and no install (simple EXE) you can drop folders of JPGs in it and it reduces them in a flash.

But, for the time being, if Access XP does not overpower me, the keeping of my home and a way to survive depends on it.

I spent most of the day since this post attempting to peer-to-peer a Win98 with the XP PC, with successive failures. This morning, I get the choice of backing out, pulling the NIC cards or continue trying. The problem with backing out is that there is even less documentation for 'Add/Remove Networks' the loss of money and the stigma of failure (yuck).

I didn't mention this earlier but I also have an older PC, Dell Optiplex GXa with no network and a Win2000 O/S I used prior to my PC upgrade that caused me much less grief. Much slower but I didn't lose an entire database.

Seems like I remember a banner for Alpha5 on the TechTips Forum for a while. Seems it was kind of spendy as well.

The object orientated programming? That took a couple of years for me also. In my little brain, all the entities in Access are objects, forms, controls, tables, and added graphics. These objects can be identified because all objects have properties. The programming is based on user manipulation of certain objects, primarily with the events like OnOpen in response to an OnClick. Thus the code is spread around much differently than in fully procedural languages like COBOL or BASIC. Quite naturally, object oriented programming is much more graphical and mouse considerate than procedural programs could ever be as well.

Enough rambling, I need 3 cups of coffee, a pound of good luck and maintenance of good humor to deal with the mess I walked away from late last night. May everyone in this forum have a better day than I experienced yesterday!
