Hi All....hope everyone is doing great! I have a question, and would just like to know if my thought process is correct, and how to go about accomplishing it, if it is correct. It is my understanding that when I created my DB, the owner was defaulted to Admin. This is fine. Now I want to put my DB on a shared network, and I am running into problems because (I presume) that since everytime someone tries to open the file, it assumes them to be user Admin. User Admin is a member of the group Admins...correct? So this gives that person exclusive open rights, and prevents others from opening the file. Now I REALLY do not want to get into setting up passwords/user groups for all the people that have to access this file...so could I do this??

Since user Admin is a member of group 'Admins', could I make user Admin a member of Workgroup 'User,' taking away the Open Exclusively option, and then just delete them (or something??) from the 'Admins' group? Would this allow everyone to access the file without having to set up passwords, etc.

Please let me know if this will work. I want to check before I start messing around too much, and screw everything up!

I have also made sure that Tools|Options|Advanced is set to 'Shared'.

Please get back to me, and let me know! I would really appreciate it~!

Thanks

Hi...I dont know if that could be it or not. There is no one accessing the file right now, and I opened it first on one computer, and then tried to open it on a second, and got a message to the effect of "The User 'Admin' is accessing this file and has set it so that this file cannot be opened or locked" (TO this effect neways! THis is not a direct quote) SO to me, this says that somehow, the User Admin has some sort of access priveledges that I dont want it to have??

Any suggestions?

Thanks Pat! - Or anyone else that can help!!!!!!

Hi there!!

No, the .lbd file is there....so I dont think that is the problem...in fact, the nature of the directory in which it has been placed is a location where everyone can place files, delete files, and edit files. I am going to try and open the file again this morning on two machines, and I will quote you the actual error message I recieve when trying to open it on the second computer.

OK, so not quite getting this...but I dont care. All of a sudden, it has decided to start working this morning! So I am going to take it, and move on! hahahhahaha!

Thanks for all your help and suggestions though, I really do appreicate it. Sometimes computers do crazy things....and I thank you for taking the time to try and figure it out! Hopefully whatever has changed, will stay the way it is now!

I was getting this "error" message as well. When I looked at the .ldb file with NotePad I noticed that it listed 2 users working on the database even though only one had it opened.

I tried editting out the second users name but couldn't save the file.

I later saw that if I opened the db with one user and only one user showed up in the .ldb file, then others were able to access the db at the same time.

My comments don't really solve the problem, but maybe gives an insight into why it happens.

Hope it never happens again!

In the type of usage you are doing you have to go to each machine and under Tools - Options - Advanced ensure that the Default Open Mode is set to shared.

Yes you are right and all of the machines are set-up that way but the error continues to randomly occur.

The ldb file will list every user who has opened the db even if they exited it later. It will remain like this, adding more and more users, until the last person exits and the file is deleted.
