Hi,

I'm designing a simple DB in Access 2000 to keep track of local customer details. All Customers live within a 20 mile area consisting of 7 towns which border on 2 Counties. I thought rather than keep typing the Town and County information in the data entry form, I would create a lookup field for the Town which also populates the County field automatically.

I created another table with the Town and County information in it and linked it to the customer table via a Town Lookup filed. I can now select town information from a drop down box but I'm having trouble trying to populate the county field when a given town is selected.

can anyone help?
Thanks in advance

Simple Software Solutions

Working on the assumption that one town can only be in one county. In your first combo have an additional column that is the county name. Make this hidden (col width = 0).

Now on the after update property of that combo state that combo box 2 = combobox.Column(n) where n is the column number -1

Having said that why do you need a second combo box when a text box will suffice?

What happens when another town uses the companies products?

Thanks DCrake for the speedy responce - You can probably tell that I'm new to Access - I can't seem to find an After Update property anywhere on the Lookup properties in Access 2000.

twoplustwo - The DB is for a Dance School. It doesn't have products as such only students who live locally. It is very rare to have any students out of the immediate area.

Also what happens when a town is in two or more counties ...

My town before they move the county lines was in 3 counties ..

It makes no difference in my case as the area is very small.

Why on earth do you want to store the county field? County is an attribute of the town, not the student. If you store the town ID in the student record, you can retrieve the county data with a query.

You're probably right about the County field neileg - I would still like to know how to autopoulate fieds when selecting data from a drop down menu. Town and County was the first thing I came across to experiment with.

If you just want to know how to do it, check out my sample here (where I populate price from a product selection):

Thanks V-Much! Good example. (unlike my Town, County saga)
