Hello all,

This is stricktly theory but I am wondering if any of you have had any problems with losing records while running antivirus software on a network type solution. i.e. AVG antivirus that uses one computer as the main server and all operations for antivirus software updates etc are run from this server. I am wondering if when the server does an automatic update on a computer if that is interupting the network connection for access (we all know how much access likes that)? I am having a horrible time with lost records. This week there have been three records lost.

Has anyone heard of any problems related to this or had similar experiences? After months of losing records this is just another theory. I don't want to start fooling around with my anti virus software but I just may just to see. Thanks for all your help.

Greg,

No.
Data getting "lost" (corrupted would be a better phrasing) is not typical for Access.
It happens to other relational databases also.
How stable is your network?
How have you set up your Access applic (split in frontend / backend).
How many concurrent users do you have?
Does is happen that users shut down without closing Access?

Have you searched the forum yet, there's loads and loads of helpfull info to be found over here regarding your issue.

RV,

The database is split FE/BE. there are usually 3-4 users at a time. I have no Idea how reliable my network is (don't really know how to test this). I have searched the forums and haven't found any help.
Concerning the users shuting down without closing access: I just noticed that one of the machines had one of those balloons pop up and say that windows automatically updated and required an automatic restart. If the database was left open when this restart happened could this be the source of the corruption?
Thank you

Greg

Could be.
Have you ever looked whether there's a ldb file located on the same location where your BE resides after having missing data?

RV

The ldb file has only been there for a couple of the corruption issues. I turned off automatic updates so I'll let it sit and see if that does anything. I still wonder if AVG could do something. Maybe I should get a new network card and see if that does anything. I don't know. This is driving me crazy.

Greg

Did you ever find a solution, Greg? I am having a similar problem that I am at the early stage of trying to narrow down.

Well, perhaps unfortunately for you, my eventual solution was to switch to MySQL. Haven't looked back since.

However, in the interim, one thing we noticed was that our backups might be causing the corruption oddly enough. If you copy the BE, make sure you kick off all connections first.

Other than that, it never stopped until we switched to MySQL. And again, if you have large enough structures, consider this option. It is wonderful.

Greg

Thanks Greg, I'll look at the backup schedule and keep MySQL in mind!

Best regards,
S. J.

I have used AVG antivirus for many year without any problems with my Access database.
