Between/And Frustration

I'm trying to put into a query Between #1/1/2008# And #12/31/2008# and Access keeps correcting it to Between "#1/1/2008#" And "#12/31/2008#"...which of course doesn't work. No matter what I seem to be doing it keeps "correcting" it. I'm frustrated. Anyone know why it is doing this? It's working fine in another query just fine. Grrr...

I wonder if it does that if the field you are filtering isn't a true date field.
