Buy Access 2010

i don't understand your last comment

what do you mean by "pull up runtime"?

Sorry, I should have said I can't open a runtime version so that I can see how my app will look to the user on his runtime version.

Even if Access is too smart to actually use the runtime engine when you have Access retail installed, you still should be able to find the download file. The actual file name is AccessRuntime.exe.

You can change your Windows Explorer settings to show extensions (I can't figure out how people can work with extensions hidden) and show hidden system files. The .exe you downloaded isn't a hidden system file so I'm not sure how that would apply.

If you know the default download location, you should be able to find the file.

Once you find it, DO NOT install it on your computer. It will only cause confusion. Only install it on computers that do not have Access at all or that have older versions of Access.

BTW - I never let users have multiple Access versions installed if I can help it. It is just too confusing to always get that pesky .....installing...... message as Access fights for control over the registry with whatever version was previously installed. For development, I have one PC with multiple versions for cross testing but I am careful as I switch and so haven't run into problems. The A2010 runtime can run older versions so if the users don't actually need full Access, just get rid of all old versions.

My etension are showing and the the two runtime I downloaded show application but also the icon is a set up icon. Since the user is now up and running I am going to forget about runtime on my machine. Are you recommending I don't put 2013 on my machine along with 2010?

To view your app as if it were under the control of the runtime engine, you have two options.
1. change the extension from .accde or .accdb to .accdr. This tells Access to pretend to be the runtime engine even if it isn't.
2. create a shortcut or bat file to open the database and follow the database name with the /r switch which also tells Access to pretend to be the runtime engine.

Dick, for your purposes, you can load multiple versions. Just make sure you never have two databases with different versions open at once. I haven't loaded A2013 so I don't know if it has any extra problems that older versions don't have. Just be aware that whenever you switch from one version to another you will get an ......installing..... message that could go on for a minute or more as one Access version fights with another over possession of the registry.

Others have said here and at Staples that 2010 and 2013 are compatible on the same machine, an at first I thought you were saying different, but I get it now just not both running at the same time. I want to get a jump on 2013 before someone ask for a db in 13 .I have worked my way up thru every version. Doses anybody know if this is one of the little changes or a major over haul?
My problem right now is that Staples couldn't download it. If I get some time between meetings in TX there is a big computer store in Houston, I might try them.

the files themseleves go in these folders

A2003 C:\program files\microsoft office\office12
A2007 C:\program files\microsoft office\office14
A2010 C:\program files\microsoft office\office15
A2013 C:\program files\microsoft office\office16 ???

I presume A2013 installs in office 16.

As of right now I only have A 2010. The tech at my local office / computer store was not able to download 2013. I have found all version of acces in the directory you mention for years. It is runtime I couldn't find, however, it is no longer an issue has I have loaded a copy of my 2010 on the clients machine without registering it, and as you said it will turn into runtime.

BTY My local office/computer store is Staples Office Supply. Do you have them in the UK

Has anybody downloaded A 2013 successfuly yet? As I mention in post 26 my local store here in FL was unable to download 2013. In a few days I will be in TX and I will try again. I am not to happy about no disc.

(Notice to All) Beware of 2010 and 2013 on the same machine) I finally got upgraded to 2013. I wanted to keep 2010 on the same machine. Somebody on the forum told me not to put 2010 and 2013 on the same machine. (I forgot who) (I think it was either Pat or Beetle) The Tech at Office Depot said it was ok as long as I didn’t try and open both at the same time, and that it was put in a different directory. As I mention in an earlier post Staples in FL could not download it. Office Depot in TX was able to download it in a different directory. I open each version at the store and then went back to my motel, and made a small sample db in 2013. I closed 2013 and open 2010 and worked on my current project. When I closed 2010 and tried to open 2013 it would not open. I went into Win Explorer and found my sample 2013 db and it had turned into 2010. I went back to Office Depot and they took 10 off and they had to reinstall 13.

Not just for 2010 and 2013. Only one version of Access should ever be installed on a PC.

Use a Virtual Machine to run any other versons required.

Ye you are right, just as I mentioned above, but even Microsoft says its ok as long as its in a different directory, but it isn't so. All beware,

Ps. I am not sure what a virtual machine, please explain..

Ps. I am not sure what a virtual machine, please explain..

The simple explanation is, you install a program like Virtual Box, and then using that program you can allocate a portion of your machine's drive space and memory to be used to install a separate operating system, running it as if it were on another machine. If you're bored, you can read the more technical explanation.

Sean, Please check the doc file on Media Fire, PM not working. Thank You in advance.

I downloaded your file. Generally I like to keep discussions like this (i.e. you're trying to solve an Access problem) in the forum, rather than by PM, so others may benefit from the solution. If you start a new thread with the question from your Word doc, I'll respond there.

Ok, I understand and I will do that in the future, but I did post this one public first, under (Public and Global Variable) I received a link from big John that was somewhat of a help but didn't answer the complete question. Also last time I posted the Pass Word public someone completly deleted my media fire. I can however list everything except the Pass Word and only email the pass word via PM to someone that is interested.

I'm not talking about posting your media fire password in the forum, just your question. I already downloaded your app, and I have advice for you but for others who might be reading it, the (new) thread wouldn't make sense without the original question. Just start a new thread with your question about handling the multiple reports and then we'll work on the solution.

ok, Thank you

A virtual machine is a model of a computer hardware and operating system run as an application inside another operating system. Hence anything installed on it is completely isolated from the host operating system.

XP Mode in Windows7 is a virtual machine.
