Change field size-results in craze result.

Over last year and a half I have tryied every thing to change field, char size, from 255 to 6 char. Never any luck.
My error is:
This error can be caused by one of the following:
The maximum number of columns allowed in a table or the maximum number of locks for a single file is exceeded.
The indexed property of a field is changed from Yes (Duplicates OK) to Yes (No Duplicates) when duplicate data exists in the table.
An expression is not specified in the Expression property of a calculated field
I have tried tech support and more.

The only person that has an answer is if he has had the same issue and found the cure.

try creating a new empty table, then running an insert query to add the old data to the new table. that should overcome the errors you are getting

I would run a query to make sure no records are actually over 6 chars.

note that changing the field size won't make much difference, other than preventing you inadvertently exceeding 6 chars.
