Try taking off the all caps in the format in the table input mask etc. (The >)
Someone else just had the exact same problem, and it appears to be caused by the uppercase formatting of the field in the table. Although I haven't been able to duplicate the error on my version of Access (Access 2003).

I followed the link provided by notification of your post right to the solution to my problem.
It appears that once you install MS Office 2003 SP3 this anomaly with combo boxes and/or list boxes using formatting is not the only problem that appears. The solution is simple: remove the formatting or apply the hot fix. I chose the latter and voila, my converted text box worked just like any other combo box I've ever created.
If you don't have MS Office 2003 SP3 installed, you will never have this happen.
Onve again, thank you for helping me regain my sanity and put this evil beasty to rest.
