I converted an MS Access 2000 DB to 2003 with no problems. I am able to open it up in Access 2003 now either by double clicking it or from Acccess - file open. I then created an MDE file in Access 2003, but when I tried to open it up I got a message saying

This database is in an unrecognized format.

The database may have been created with a LATER version of Microsoft Office Access than the one you are using. Upgrade your version of Microsoft Office Access to the current one, then open this database.

I noticed a service pack will get rid of this errror. My question is if I distribute the MDE will the user get the same error if they don't have the service pack installed on their PC? Will my installation of the service pack fix the errror and allow anyone to use the file without getting the message.

Thanks

if you created an mde in A2003, then you would need A2003 to open it

although you can save an A2003 in A2000 format, i dont think you can create an A2000 MDE from it

so that might be the problem - you are NOW trying to open an A2003 mde with an earlier version of Access - hence the message

thats why you can issue the mde with A2003 runtime, although then you dont get all the pretty features (sorts/filters/import/export/run time error Handling) etc you get with Access normally - you have to programme it all in

Mde

Thanks for the reply

I created the MDE in 2003 and am unable to open it now in 2003. I notice this is one of the errors the service pack will fix.

However I would not want another user getting the same error who does not have the service pack installed. I am hoping if I apply the SP that it will fix any error and allow anyone to then open it.
