Hello

Iam about to finish my first DB and i was wondering about security, which is the easiest way of creating "user accounts" with passwords and restrictions????

Thanks

Hi

Tools > Security > User and Group Accounts to set up the accounts, then Tools > Security > User and Group Permissions for the permissions.

It's quite straight forward to use at that level

Hope this helps.

The EASIEST is to use Tools > Security > User Level Security Wizard (instead of using the other listed above because for first time users the wizard will help you through it and you can hose yourself if you do it wrong manually. Also, it will help you build your workgroup shortcut for starting the database.

One IMPORTANT NOTE: Make a COPY of your database BEFORE doing anything with the Security so, if you accidentally lock yourself out, you can fall back to your copy and you don't lose everything (many have done this, including me many years ago).

My experience with restricting users the more restrictions the greater user curiosity becomes. Be judicious with restricting access. I always use the example of the "secure" Executive Payroll when the salary analysis was left on a printer. That printer commanded the attention of users for several hours.

Thanks for your replies guys.

I really need to stablish user accounts and permissions, so ill have to try...Just one question, a friend suggested me to backup not only my database but also "System.mdw" do you think this is required?? how should i do it? just a normal copy paste with a different name???

Thanks again

You really shouldn't need to do that because you are going to create another MDW file while going through the Security Wizard; you aren't going to change the System.mdw file.
