crosstab queries or Pivot tables?

HI, i am trying to create a pivot table query in ACCESS 2010, from 2 columns of data- status field and a year field, without having to export through excel etc.
however in excel i can use a field for row headers and then the same field for Count of... in the data area. ACCESS is prompting me for 3 separate fields to populate the pivot table query. please advise...

You can do the same in Access. You need a Row Heading, a Column Heading and a Value field in a Cross-Tab Query. Just bring down a field that you have already used and assign that as the Value field and Count it.
 
Hi, thanks for quick response. have tried that, and it is closer to what i want, but when viewing in datasheet view, am getting the row headings listed as a table, and not grouped together as a typical pivot would look...
