Hi All,

I'm having a strange problem with my 2007 database. I make changes and email a new frontend in .accdr format to my client quite regularly without any problems, the last time being last week. This week he is getting a message "This database is in an unrecognized format", "The database may have been created with a later version of than the one you are using. Upgrade your version of to the current one ,then open this database"

Note the big spaces in the message. Initially I thought it was just corrupt so did all the usual import to new db, repair acompact etc, I diagnosed my computer etc etc.

The bizarre thing about this problem and makes me think its my problem is that the file I sent this guy last week, he still had in his email so he downloaded and it opened fine. The database works fine on my computer and I haven't installed or done anything or had anything strange happen lately.

hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! help!!!!!!!!

Kind regards,

Rachael

Do you have Office 2007 Service Pack 1 installed and he doesn't?

The big spaces disappeared when I posted, they are after version in both cases in the message, this guy has a full version of Access 2007 and I just got him to run the Diagnostic thingo and it didn't detect any compatiblity problems, remembering again that last weeks database runs fine.

thanks

Hi Bob,

I do but am just waiting for this guy to get back to me, how can I tell when the service pack 1 was installed, my computer does it automatically, but it doesn't tell me when in the Control Panel , Add remove programs

Thank you kindly

Yes I have SP1 but he doesn't.

Do you think that my computer updated in the last few days and his hasn't and this is causing the problem?

How can I tell when my SP1 got installed as it doesn't tell me in Add/Remove prgrams?

Thank you very much

Rachael

That would be the problem. Just get him to install it (there are some very important fixes in it). As for when it got installed, you can go to Windows Update and select Update History.

Cheers, Thanks so much

I just spoke to the guy and he said one of the other computers only has an old vesion of Access (2003 i think) and is using the 2007 runtime. It doesn't work on his either so does the runtime need updating as well?

Also, I just checked my update history and I had service pack 1 installed back on Sept 25th, I have been emailing databases (.accdr) without problem right up til last wednesday 8th Oct. The last wed version he has in his email works.

I appreciate your help with this, thank you.

Kind regards, Rachael

Thank you so much Bob, I appreciate your help, I will get him to do these things and post back with the result although it still doesn't explain why it worked up until last wed but I guess somethings can't be explained sometimes.

thank you, Rachael

Access tries to open a database with the last access version used

so if your colleague is trying ot open a A2007 database and the last dbs he used was A2003, then it will fail with the message he got - ie A2003 cant read the database - open A2007 manually then try to open the file

Having said that, Bob is most likely right, and it may well be the installation issue

Sorry Gemma but you are incorrect in this one. Access will NOT try to open a file it is not associated with (ACCDR, ACCDB) - Access 2003 is not set to open those (I have multiple versions loaded and if I select one of those, it goes to Access 2007 immediately, even if my last used was 2003 because it is associated with those file extensions. If you do it with MDB or MDE files, then yes that would be the case. But in this case it isn't and it has to do with the Service Pack levels. As for why it wouldn't fail right away, perhaps there was nothing changed earlier which relied on the new SP level, but then something was changed that relied on it and that's why the problem - because it didn't exist prior to SP1.

true, the association for accdb's would be A2007 wouldnt it

now i thought it was a typo, but what is an accdr, compared with an accdb?

Just to follow up, YAY, the install of SP1 on the other guys machine worked and the machine with full 2003 and runtime 2007 - by installing the new runtime, that was fixed as well!

thanks Bob for your help, you've made me look good in the eyes of this other guy but all the credit is yours (I told him too!)
