Database is in unexpected state

The following message poped up today as I attempted to open my database. The database is in an unexpected state, Microsoft Access can't open it. The database has been converted from a prior version by using the DAO CompactDatabase method insted of the Convert Database command on the Tools bar menu. This has left the database in a partially converted state.

I have no idea how this happened. What is the best way to proceed. Database backup probably isn't an option. Also, how could I or someone else have done this without being prompted that this was occuring. I am puzzled and without any options that I know off. Help

Create a new db and import all of the objects from the corrupted db.
