Can anyone advise, I have created a Database with Users, permissions and logins by using the Users and permissions button then using User Level Security Wizard, it all works fine but, It create a shortcut of the Database with I can use, but the original will not allow me to open it, it get the error message shown below.

I have never done this before so I am not sure if this is how it is supposed to be.

Help

If the shortcut opens the db and when you click on the actual db file you get that message, the security settings are working as they should.

So are you saying this is what is supposed to happen?

Shazz

Yes. The database now has secuirty which is why you get the error message.

I am not sure if I made my self clear or not, but I am the Administrator of the database and the original will not let me open it, I get the message when I click on open.

It doesn't matter who you are - the database can't tell that you're an administrator. You have put security settings on the file so it can't be opened unless you use the shortcut.

One last question, When I backup the database, it backs up the version that I can not open?

Shazz

I'm not quite sure what you mean? Is this a backup of your whole computer - how is this backup being done?

Either way it is a good idea to backup the version with security as I take it that will be the version you are going to use from now on.

No it is not a back up of my whole computer, just the backup of the Database, but as I said when I ten try and open the backed up version, it will not allow me to open it, it gives me the same error I got in the first post.

So the back up version(pre-security settings) also gives you the error?

Do you have any other Access dbs you can try and open? If they give you an error then your security settings may be wrong.

What workgroup are you joined to? - To find out; open Access and choose tools/security/workgroup administrator (2003)

No, the version that we now have a username and password to login version, when backed up will not allow me into the backed up version, I assume it should be the same as when you back up a database without these security settings.

Ok i think i'm with you.

Yes the security settings will be copied across to the backup. To open it you need to create it's own shortcut as follows:

1. Copy the shortcut that opens the original db.
2. Right-click on the new shortcut and go to properties.
3. Edit the target path with the name of the backup db. Also edit the Start in path if this has changed.
4. Click apply - if there is no error you have been successfull.
5. Close the properties and click the link.

Hope this helps

James

I,m sorry i am not sure what you mean, the New backup that i can not open does not show as a short cut but it will not open??

Sorry

Make a copy of that shortcut and then do as i said earlier:

I must be completely stupid, nothing I am doing is working.

Sorry to have wasted your time.
