This morning when I got into work, one of the databases I admin died. It has since locked itself open stating it needs to be repaired. However, when you try to, it says it is locked open by machine......However, that machine has been restarted many times and it is still locked open. The database is located on a shared drive. I am assuming that the network drive has locked it open instead of that PC.

Would someone explain why that has happened? As well as how to stop that from happening in the future. This is very frustrating since I have to change other things that are driven by that database, due to the name of the database changing for a short time. Once I can delete the corrupted one, I have to change them back.

How it hapened : No idea...

Try opening the database on the server where the shared drive is located and close it again. Try deleting it then.

Or, maybe you can still fix it. Try compacting and reparing first. If that still doens't work, create a new, blank database and import all objects and relations from the broken database into the new one.

If that still doesn't work... RIP...

Good luck!

Once the server reset itself over the weekend the database was no longer locked open. It has since been repaired and taken care of.

It is just very frustrating and it has happened on more than one occastion. I was hoping someone might be able to explain why, and if I am lucky enough perhaps tell me how to prevent in the future. :D

Thanks,

I had this problem also at work.

In a multi-user environment, where your users have to work in the database (front end/back end), it's a guarantee for corruption and problems...

We solved this by transferring our data to MS-SQL server. Since then, corruption didn't occur again. Maybe this might be a sollution for your problem?

Yes, they have a MS-SQL server, but not the money in the budget to pay for IS to set it up and maintain it for them. Hopefully soon I will have that class and can do it for them.
Until then I will have to deal with the fickle 'woman'..aka MS Access! (Yes I am female so I can say that)

Haha :)

Well good luck then, I hope you get the promotion! :)
