Hi all,

I am developing a small scale inventory system which will record all the tagged items into a table. I am expecting 2000+ entries per month, which means that in a year there will be 24,000+ records in the table.

I have a perception that with this size of table, it will become bulky and performance will be degraded considerably. If I am right, what should I do to resolve this issue???? Is it really a large table size with 24,000 records???

Any expert opinion regarding this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance and Regards

24k records shouldnt be a problem at all, I regularly have databases with much more records... performance will drop (slightly) as more and more records are added.

Thats really not that big! just be carefull of something like a open query addressing a combo box etc - that can take time to populate....

I have some HUGE databases which are not a problem even on the very datd machines they run on. Ensure you define the fields in the table to the right sizes and run proper indexing and there will be no speed related problems due to file size.

I adapted a database, which one of my colleagues gladly hosted at his site. This one contains 4 millions rows in total, with one table (Salaries) containing 2.7 million entries.

Download it, and play with queries and see how well it works. I think you will find that Access is quite responsive when the queries are well-written because it only fetches the keys (actually pages containing the keys) and only load the complete row on demand. Of course, a bad query or unnecessary operations can easily bring even smaller database to its knees.

So, it's more important that you understand how to optimize your queries and design your forms around the optimized queries than keeping it small enough.

HTH.

Thanks a lot for this guidance. I 'll take care about optimization of queries. By the way no combo box will be populated from this table. I hope that this table will not cause any problem to me.

Thanks again.
