I'm in design view and trying new change to short date to 12/31/13. I'm trying to change the input mask to take this type of date with not much luck. I am also trying to advance to next field after I enter the date.

Sounds like you are trying to enter data directly into a Table, you shouldn't you should enter data via a Form .

I was Thinking of a form. What I was hoping that access might have some direct way of knowing when there's six values in a field that it has to go to the next field automatically.
It seems like such a natural. But that would be too easy.

As Brian has pointed out the Form is the way to achieve this , eg 00/00/00;0;_
As for the advance to next field if the tab number you wish to advance to is the tab number following your date field just tab . or you could enter In the after update property Me.Text2.SetFocus

I have about 7 thousand records to enter. Is approximately 30 deals on each application that have to be processed. I need to Presley enter four of the feels before anybody else touches the permit. The fuels are always identical as far as the number of characters in the fields 6c, 5c, date & 7c. because of the volume I'm trying to find the fastest method. I have considered Excel, data entry as text delimited & Access.
So far I'm coming up blank. Because of my method of entering the data is most important to me to be able to enter the proper number of characters and have it automatically advance to the next field. the only change to that method would be the last field which came contain seven characters. That field could be anywhere from 3 to 7 characters preceded by zeros.
User date picker would slow me down. Even the use of two characters for the month when it only needs one character. June, is a hindrance.
Logically I would think Access could do these things almost out-of-the-box.

"d, m, yy" I enter 3,5,12
Here are my results:
d,m,yy is displayed. If i click back into the fields it will display the proper format 3/5/2012. Just as soon as I leave the field it returns to d,m,yy.
I'm getting closer to my needs but it sure seams a bit funky.

Thinking or rather decision making is what slows down a good data entry person, if you can't auto tab every field then auto tab none, as for the date format it will be the format presented to the person not whether they enter a single or two digit date that matters.

Until I recover from the devastation wrought upon my company by others I guess it's all up to me. Incense and dealing with thousands of records that have to be compared to my existing data files, by one field, I was trying to cut every corner possible. But you might be right a simple return key might be the answer. Especially since I have been trying to work this out I could've entered possibly several thousand permits and only have to worry about 10 or 15,000 more.
As far as all of tabbing the fields, I could actually be very happy with using only one field worth of data. But if I was able to enter by date and three additional meals I would have to return to the data. All of my records have been scanned and appear on the monitor making the process so much more easier.
I did get a suggestion from answer MS that I might even try. But it seems to be talking about creating a form which I have never attempted.
