Had a little problem last night with the laptop...big crash! Well, I finally found some info on the problem with the corrupt file "hal.dll" I went through the fix and did this one...
4. Type bootcfg /rebuild, and then press ENTER.
5. When the Windows installation is located, the following instructions are displayed:
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All)
[Type Y in response to this message.]

Enter Load Identifier:
[This is the name of the operating system. Type Windows XP Professional or Windows XP Home Edition.]

Enter OS Load options:
[Leave this field blank, and then press ENTER].

Now my problem is when my computer is booting it ask me to pick an operating system... The new default "Windows XP Home Edition" or the old "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" ..... How do I get rid of this second option and not see the screen to choose?
Thanks

Off the top of my head (I have Vista), right click on My computer, select properties, select Advanced, select Startup and Recovery Settings (based on my memory and what I see in Vista). You should be able to set it up how you want it there.

Thanks George... I'll give that a look when I get back to the laptop.

OK George, I can set the new default to wait Zero... but should I change the boot.ini to match the old one?
here's the current.
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home Edition"
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

I thought you could actually delete one on that screen. Can't tell as I don't have XP anymore.

I'm sorry. I know so little about this topic that my advice probably isn't very good, except where to find the setting.

CEH, I've not really used Vista, so I can only offer this:

Hope that helps. :)

Banana,

You wouldn't believe how many hours I've wasted reading all the cartoons you link to.

I'll be willing to bet I spent > 20 hours reading every QC comic after you linked it. An addictive soap opera.

Thanks, man.

Was that supposed to be sarcastic or complimentary "Thanks, man"? :p ;)

Glad you liked them. Dr. McNinja is by far the favorite of the bunch. :)

Thanks Banana... :) But I'm not using Vista....Windows XP.......
THe question now is about the boot.ini file..........
If I rewrite it to.........
[boot loader]
timeout=0
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOW S
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

will it work properly?

So sorry! Somehow I saw the word 'Vista' and thought it was a Vista problem! :o

Hope you find a solution. :)
