Help accessing database background

I have recently taken over a database from someone that has left the company as administrator however I have had no handover notes or password information.

I need to get into the database background however holding the shift key when I open it is not working. Is there any other ways to get round this?

However legitimate your question is, there are certain individuals who perport to be someone they are not in order to circumvent security issues. Let me say that I am not labelling you, however it should be the responsibility of the company to ensure that all passwords are reset once an employee of this nature leave the company. If they do not know, or cannot obtain the information from you predecessor, then other courses of action will need to be taken.
