Dear All

I am Gopi, just joined today. As i was comfortable in using Excel I have never worked with Access but willing to learn and perform better by utilizing Microsoft Access. Thanks.

I am working in a NDT company, here we have several products with each item having individual identification number. We provide items on the request of the technicians for their projects.

So I want to make a table where i can see the following fields Product name, Product identification No, Expiry date, Days remaining for Expiry, Locations of the Product, working condition, Balance in Hand and history of movement of the product.

Is it possible to make one like this. Please kindly guide me.

Please do provide any example or links which will be helpful to design.

THANK YOU ALL. TAKE CARE

How are these columns suppose to be filled in? Do you import the values or are you going to fill them in manually?

Welcome to the forum !

It is possible, but NOT by using a single table.
In Access you must be a lot more analytical than in Excel.
And the "Divide et impera" it is one gold rule.

So, at first view I think you must have:
A table tblProducts (ID_Product, ProductName)
Another table tblTechnicians(ID_Technician, TechnicianName) , Maybe another table tblSectors(ID_Sector, SectorName) to know the sector for every technician
.....and so on.

So, the best start is to learn something about NORMALIZATION for databases.

Cheers.

Hello Christopher, Hope you are doing good.
All the value will be entered manually. Waiting for you tips. Thanks.

Mihail.. Thanks welcoming me to the Forum.

I believe with more analytical we can perform more..

Thanks for the Idea, If i am doing it in different tables as adviced will i be able link these table and collect all the info in a single table. Looks a single table will make it more simpler. Sorry if my basics are too bad on this.

Will start to learn on normalization ASAP.

Thank you, Take Care Mihali

All good here, hope that you're doing the same.
It seems like a pretty easy table to make, just input your columns and fill them in.

However I suggest that you make several tables as Mihail suggests.
Try splitting you're tables up in categories that easily can be linked.

For example the ones that Mihail gave you where you make tables such as
Product, Sectors and Technicians!

If you need anyhelp with your joining of tables I'd gladly help you!

@CHRISTOPHER

Thanks buddy, I will try to work out what you and Mihail suggested. I have to look for some tutorial to start with.

Will try doing and if struck will come back here. :)

Cheers

Unlike Excel, in Access what you VIEW is rarely a table (as a sheet in Excel).
As example, if you have a table with Technicians (ID_Technician, ID_Sector, TechnicianName) and other table with Sectors (ID_Sector, SectorName) the users can't be interested by al those ID_ fields.

The users will ask something like this (and you will be able to answer using ONLY that tables):
In what sector is active the technician John ?
Your answer: John is in the IT sector
Q: I need to know what techniciens work in the IT sector ?
A: John, Michel, Tom .....
Q: Ho meny sectors are ?
A: 6
Q: How many technicians work in the IT sector ?
A: 3
Q: Is (technician) Jerry working in IT sector ?
A: Yes (or No)
Q: Is Fred a technician ?
A: Yes (or No)

And so on...
As you can see, what the user view is NOT your tables.

Hope you make a summary view about what databases are and how work.

I repeat: Learn about Databases NORMALIZATION. It take one hour or two to understand this concept. Without this understanding is IMPOSSIBLE to design databases, even at a very low level.
