I'm using access 2000. I have a master form and have 3 subforms =
inserted. On one of the sub forms I have a combo box. When I enter data =
from the list, I get this error message: "You can't assign a value to =
this object. * The object may be a control on a read only form.
* The object may be open in design View.
* The value may be to large for the field.

Then after you click ok to the error message it takes the data. I have 2 =
other text boxes, and one memo box that does the same thing, yet it =
takes the data if you click ok. So I'm kind of lost here. Can anyone =
help? -Thanks John.

You usually get this type of message if you try and assign a value to a "calculated field". You may want to review the "after update" event of your combo box and see what fields are being updated.

timer event

Oh, now I think I might know what it is. I have a timer event set on the master form, so time will run on the form. Maybe that is causing it. It is not set on the combo box though, just the master form. I guess I could do away with the time field on the master if that is the cause. -Thanks John

??

Well, I'm still lost. I did away with the timer event and the time field on the master form, and I still get the same error message. Can't think of anything else it could be. Any other suggestions??

If you db is not too big, you may e-mail it to me. I'll see if I can figure out your problem. No promises.

Says its too big

Its only a half mg, and it still would not go. Let me know if you have an email address and I will send it that way.

OK, got your mdb. Which form and subforms are you having problems with?

having troouble with first field in Incident type. the first field in person, and the summary and signature field all give me the error. I know i am using auto number but, feel I need to.

Hi John,

The problem lies in the fact that you are using the same query as the source for your main form and the 3 sub-forms. I have a "suggested" solution for you. Look at the form "Master2" and the "qryINCIDENTS" which I have created for you. You'll see that by doing it this way, you do not get any error messages when adding a new record.

Hope this helps you.
