I have been trying to design an access database and finally got my tables set up like they need to be. It consists of three tables and 2 one to many relationships. This is the first time that I have ever tried to do this in my life and it's for work. Here is my current problem:

I am trying to query information, since in each of my 2 tables I have made the primary key an auto number so there are no repititions. Then in the junction table that I have I have taken both of those primary keys and made them primary in the junction table. I have related them, they have lines. Then when I try to query it tells me mismatch in type. I have researched this up and down for days. It says you can change the type in a query and when I do as they say: properties to format, the box is blank! There is nothing to choose from. I feel like I am loosing my mind!  I don't know the first thing about codes. This database is over 5 years of past company information. I feel like I am spinning in circles with this thing and when something happens to turn out right-by some miracle-I don't know how it happened. Just when I think I have this thing figured out it throws me out another error message!

Please Help!

What is the data type of the 2 fields in the junction table? It should be long integer.

BTW, a descriptive thread title would help future users out.

I don't even know what a descriptive thread title is, like I said, I have never done this before and am not familiar with access jargon. I have not even been to training yet except for an intro and I am supposed to have this done by June 1st. When I got hired they knew I had no Access knowledge except to enter data into one, not design one. Some of the information I have will query and some will not. I don't know why! I have realted things but am not sure if they are related right, they won't query how I want so they probably are not. I get error messages and I have created a form with a subform in it to enter information but the corresponding information won't stay together. If I have one thing in a mainform and the details in the subform, when I go to the next page why aren't the details for the next specific thing showing up?

Post

Post your current DB with a description of what you want the DB to do and I will have a look.

When you post a question in these forums (or other forums for that matter) it helps if you say something more meaningful in the title other than "Help!". Everyone posting a question needs help.

here is my design (kind of)

Here are my tables:

Source

Source ID-auto number-PRIMARY
Source Name-text
Street Address-text
City-text
State-text
Zip-text
Contact First Name-text
Contact Last Name-text
Phone-text (with imput mask)
Email-Text

Occurrence

Occurrence ID-auto number-PRIMARY
Occurrence Name-text
Date-Date/Time

Occurrence Details

Source ID-text PRIMARY
Occurrence ID-text PRIMARY
Amount-currency
Type-text (with a drop down)
Outcome-yes/no
Details-text

This is a database of sponsors and the events or programs that they have sponsored. My boss liked the word source for donor and occurrence for the event. It is a many to many table. In the thrid table, details, I have made both ID's primary to make that set of information unique. The question that I will be asking the most would be for it to for example: Show me a source that I can use for $1,000 sponsorships by Applebee's in 2005. I would also want it to show me the contact information so what I have been doing in design view is pulling out the Source name and contact information from the source table and the date from the occurrence table, then the details I want I pull from the details table. These are all set up in the grid but if I try to query by entering Applebee's it will pull nothing when there should be 20 entries that pop up. I can however query by the type. I think it is something to do with having the ID's in auto number and then in the relating table having them as text, but how do I fix this if I have to manually enter them in the joining table? There are so many entries in the others that have no ID so I had to make them up with auto number

Your key fields in the "base" tables are autonumbers, but text in the junction table. As I said earlier, they need to be long integers in the junction table.

The data type is number in the junction table, the field size is long interger. I did not see a place to put long interger into the data type.

You said text here:

Source ID-text PRIMARY
Occurrence ID-text PRIMARY

Number/Long Integer is correct. You should not get the type mismatch error on the join if they are long integers. Can you post a sample db if you are still getting it?

Is there a way to post it on here? It would not let me attach it. I have made a mock one for you to look at with fictional information set up the same way that my actual database is set up.

If you go to the advanced reply area, there's a "Manage Attachments" button that will let you attach a zipped mdb.

make sure it is compacted and zipped!!
