Holidays in danger zones

They are having a laugh. I've been to Detroit and it wasn't bad at all, I found the people very friendly.

I would have thought that most places in the USA would be on the list.

Most people generally carry guns around for 'protection',(except those posters on this site who make out they are squeaky clean and abhore guns:rolleyes:) an average 86 people are shot dead every day in the US.
Nowhere in the US appears safe from mugging / robbery / ra** /carjacking etc.

I can't see what the attraction is there.

Yeah, we all carry weapons and it is like a scene out of "Mad Max" so whatever you do, don't come here. So an average of 86 people are shot dead out of 301 Million (which is a percentage of .00000285%). You'd have a better chance of winning the lottery TWICE in a row than to get shot.

Col - you are one bigotted individual :D I am glad that most people aren't as ignorant as you are.

The line in bold makes me laugh. Statistically speaking on a per capita basis, the UK has a higher rate of carjacking, mugging, and robbery. Being that these are more often than not, random crimes, I would say that the UK is much more dangerous than the US for the average citizen. Most of those shootings you speak of are not random acts of violence, but premeditated and personal, so most people are safe from being shot.

It seems to me we have less random acts of violence because we are allowed to carry guns. You never know if the person you intend to rob is armed, so it makes for a little higher risk. On a side note, not too many people actually carry guns legally. Criminals will get weapons by any means necessary, just like in the UK.

You can look at the statistics I speak of here:

I'm glad that most of you realise that Col does not speak for all us UK citizens, sure on my travels i've occasionally felt a little uneasy, once in the States when I got lost driving in the Venice area of LA and the place started to look a little seedy, but mainly in places like Naples (Italy not Florida where we were one thanks giving, the people were great), and a fellow traveller got mugged in Budapest.

i've been to the States only 7 or 8 times and never felt threatened, but then I don't walk in the seedy parts of cities , just as i don't here.

Neither do I ;)

That's what gets so frustrating at times here in the WC. It seems that we get hit with a lot of GENERALIZING as if all U.S. citizens were exactly the same (Bush clones, muggers, violent gun carrying, etc.) where that is a very, very, very small number. Just like I would assume that INDIVIDUALS in ANY country are exactly that; individuals with different feelings, hopes, dreams, etc. It is a small FEW that exhibit the "bad" side of society and which can give a location, or group of individuals, a bad name.

From the link you provided, there were no stats given for car jackings or muggings, so I'm unclear where you're getting your evidence from. The per capita number of robberies was, indeed, higher in the UK - we rank #8, while the US is at #11

However, look at murders with guns per capita and the US is at #8 while the UK is at #32.

Overall homicide rate: US is #14 and the UK fails to rate a mention

Assaults: US is #6, UK is #8.

Rapes - US is #9, Uk is #13.

Yes, the UK is bad in terms of the risk of having your car stolen (I had seven cars stolen while living there), but on all the violent crimes the US is worse, whether its by a small amount or a large amount.

There doesn't seem to be any indication that there are less acts of violence in the US (quite the contrary), nor that guns help the situation.

My point was that in most murders, homicides, and rapes, the victim and perp know each other. These are not random acts of violence in most scenarios. The UK ranked higher in what is considered to be typically random acts in almost all categories...

I'm glad that most of you realise that Col does not speak for all us UK citizens,

I never said I did. I just know from what I read and hear on the news.

As I said, most US posters here are squeaky clean and wouldn't even dream of owning or carrying a gun. They are absolute perfection, as most Americans think they are.

I realise that. I lost the liking for the USA on that tragic day when John Lennon was killed by an American, many people including me have never forgiven the USA for that.

Awww, thanks Bob, that's nice - but I'm afraid that alot of people think the way I do about the USA.

Why do you think your government issued advice to US travellers to say they came from Canada and not the USA when travelling overseas - especially in the UK?

Boy you do have mental issues.

I wonder how much of a shock is was to Americans to finally be told by their government that the US wasn't actually the world and that other countries actually existed even if they couldn't identify them:rolleyes:

If you want my opinion it's because of the small percentage of unsavory individuals that hold the world's problems against US.

Similar to the small percentage of unsavory individuals here that make US such a hostile country to visit....

Also, I would like to hypothesize that since Colin obviously knows so much about US that he is in fact a US citizen merely trying to pass himself off as an Englishman. That or he harbors the same views of US that he so pointedly accuses US of harboring against the rest of the world.

What is that little saying my grandmother used to tell me?

If it Walks like a duck and talks like a duck. Must be a duck.

At any rate. I wouldn't visit Detriot nor would you find me in Iran. lol

Have you ever met any Iranians?

Have you ever met any Iranians?
Not the natives. No. I've never been to Iran.

I have known a few Iranians that immigrated here to the states. They are in fact decent hard working individuals. That goes for the Detriot natives I've known as well.

I wouldn't be caught dead in Iran only because of the political fires that seem to endlessly consume the middle east.

Detriot is a different matter altogether though. I drive an import. lol :p
