How do I delete a line?

Hi,

This is baffling me. It SHOULD be easy but I can't do it!!

When you type a line of -------- or ======== right across the page, Word converts those into lines. How can I get rid of those lines? I can't click on them and although I can move them up and down the page by inserting and deleting other (blank) lines of text, I cannot delete the lines themselves.

And I can't just undo, because this is a document that I got from someone else and need to reformat.

Thank you.

I think if you put the cursor above the line and drag across it to a line below it and hit delete it will go away.

???

Nope...tried that. It just moves the line up.

Can you zip and post the document (or a sample)?

I think they are considered to be borders, go to Format Borders and edit them there, click on none probably removes all.

Or try this: Put the cursor just above the line, holding the shift key down, hit the down arrow. This should select the line. Then hit the delete key.

???

OK update:D
Click format - styles and formatting
you will find the ones you have used listed there and you will be able to delete them.

Tried both of those

Format > Borders > None did SOMETHING. Not sure what, a minor change to some spacing or somethinig but didn't delete the line

Shift+Down didn't select the line either, just the lines of blank text, so when i deleted them the line moved up as before.

Sample of doc attached. Try to delete the line between sections 1 and 2 (just above "Waiting list position".)

Thanks for your help, folks.

Put the cursor on the line above it and do format->borders and shading. You should be able to delete it from there...

I used my 1st suggestion format . borders but on testing in another doc both my suggestions seemed inconsistent so more work is needed to get to a definitive answer, but the "to do list" calls before the boss gets home.:D
will experiment and get back later

Brian

Thanks Brian, no rush with this.

It IS inconsistent though, isn't it? I played around in another document, where selecting the text-lines either side also selected the line. But it doesn't always work.

I thought you were retired? :D

So did I, but wives don't know the word.

Pat the answer is so simple its laughable that we didn't see it before, my first suggestion is correct.

Method
Select last line of paragraph before the line you wish to delete
Select Format > Borders and Shading

You will now see the borders of that paragraph ie just your line as a bottom border, edit delete at will.

Sorry for delay in getting back to you. You're right...that does work.. I never realised the line created by the ----- was actually a border.
