I think either word could work in this context.
 
My dear wife was married once before to a guy who apparently took that situation for granted. Didn't work so well for him. I got my wife on the rebound AND he's now on his third wife. Further, he can't afford to split from #3 because it might cost him more than money. I'm thinking essential body parts among other probable losses.
