Yes, but if they don't have design ability in a form or report, it would seem that they did this to an accde file and not an accdb file.
Although Carys has not said they made an accde this is certainly consistent with the reported symptoms and I have little doubt this is the case which is why I asked. It was the only explanation left.
I can see how it would happen. Two clicks and it is done. No explanation of what the user has chosen to do. MS assumes you know what you are doing. The only difference from the original file name is the last letter of the extension. The file date of the accde is likely to be later than the original and it would be so easy to delete the older file.
So Carys (and TrekMietta), it wasn't splitting the database that caused the problem. Unfortunately, making an accde is a one way journey. That is their main purpose, distributing a protected design.
You are going to have to start over. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. It is a tough lesson.
I would also suggest to your IT manager to change your server backup strategy. Make daily backups but do something like keeping the first of the week for a month, the first of the month for a quarter and the first of the quarter for a year. You can still loose stuff but you would rarely lose everything on a big project.
