My town was lucky enough to have it's own superfund site (no need to wait for the one coming down the river at us) caused by Raymark (makers of asbestos brake pads). Walmart's garden center is sitting on top of it now. One of my friends worked in their computer room which was in the basement of the headquarters building and he reported black sludge leaking up through the carpets. Raymark has been gone for years but the Brakettes are still going strong. Pretty good ladies softball team. At least my husband worked at the Trumbull office which didn't leak sludge.
Textron (formerly Avco Lycoming) left us much less of a mess which they are finally cleaning up. At least it's ordinary manufacturing debris and not something deadly like asbestos and PCBs. They may actually be able to repurpose some of the old buildings before they totally disintegrate.
