Read this today:

The traditional word “Zollstock” (literally “inch-stick”) is still in use, and maybe more common than “Meterstab”. However, every Zollstock shows meters and centimeters rather than inches. In America we have a ruler, which is a short/partial yard stick

Mind you, if you compare a metric ton and an imperial ton, you actually get slightly more in the metric ton than the imperial.

Incorrect. A metric ton (tonne) is 2205 lbs. A ton is 2240 lbs.

Our miles are about 5000ft. It's a good thing to know because the Elon Musk starship is a tad short of 500ft, a tenth of a mile....

And when the pilot says we are cruising at 30,000ft you can easily convert it into miles:-

6 Miles!

Except a mile is 5280 feet so your conversion is well off.

I worked with a guy who had been a boilermaker. He said the conversion to metric was the best thing that ever happened,
Take a pipe with a flange 48 inches diameter at the holes. The plan requires drill 32 holes so calculate the circumference at the holes. They are 4.71238898 inches apart. That is approximately 4 & 91/128ths apart.

But one does not mark out the holes by spacing from each other as that would accumulate errors but by the total distance to each hole.
Second hole position 9 & 27/64ths.

You can calculate the distances for the others if you like but then remember to add a bit occasionally for the slight error.
Fortunately there are measures that stick to inches or you would have to convert the inches to feet too.

Metric you simply divide by 32 and multiply by the hole position.
