Need Suggestions

I am designing an inventory control / Order information system for a home textile factory - i have run into a problem that i hope someone will assist me with.

the data flow is somewhat like this:

Fabric is received from the mill
|
Stored in the fabric store
|
fabric is issued to the cutting department
|
the fabric is cut to size (Pillow, sham , comforter etc.)
|
the cut length fabric is sent for stitching

Now the problem i am facing is that the cutting department does not only receive fabric - they will receive Polyfill (for the comforters etc.) then they can also receive complete stitched items for re-cutting (if the stitched item is rejected - it can be re-cut for a smaller item).

i would like suggestions as to how to go about this - because a complete item's attributes are different that cut item or a stitched item.

the solution i have come up with is:

separate tables for fabric, cut items, stitched items, packed items, polyfill etc.

then each department carries out their transactions and the ins and outs are posted in the relevant table along with the name of the department - i would appreciate if somebody could tell me if there is a better way of doing this.

thanks in advance.

Bert.
