Iphone question

Quick question about the Iphone. My friend can get me one for cheap so I'm thinking about getting one. I was just wondering if I HAVE to buy the $20 data plan or can I just use this as a phone? I heard from someone that you MUST have the data plan or nothing on the phone will work.

I found the answer if anyone was wondering...

Q: What if I'm an existing AT&T / Cingular customer? Do I have to start a new contract?
A: No you don't have to start a new contract but you do have to add the $20 unlimited data plan to use the internet and email.

Q: Can I just use the iPhone for the iPod / internet device?
A: No. Until you activate the phone via iTunes it will be locked and unusable.
